Arctic Alaska Northern Workshop – Day 1: A Wild Chase for the Lights

Day 1 of our Arctic Alaska Northern Workshop kicked off yesterday, and what a ride it was! We left Fairbanks around 8 AM, heading six hours north to Coldfoot. Along the way, we made the obligatory pit stops—Yukon River Base Camp for a refuel (both for the cars and our caffeine levels) and the Arctic Circle for that classic “I made it!” photo op.

We rolled into Coldfoot around 3 PM, checked into our hotel, and grabbed some dinner—fueling up for what we hoped would be an epic night of aurora chasing. A quick look at the forecast, however, told a different story: 60–90% cloud coverage in pretty much every direction. But, like always, we shrugged and said, “Let’s see what happens.”

With optimism (and a lot of snacks), we pushed north, driving nearly four hours through the Brooks Range and over Atigun Pass. The clouds refused to budge. At some point, we realized we were only two hours from Deadhorse and the North Slope—aka, basically knocking on the Beaufort Sea. But with the storm holding strong, we finally waved the white flag and turned back south, fingers crossed for a miracle.

And then, at 3 AM—boom—the sky cracked open, and the Northern Lights exploded into a dazzling show. Our workshop clients were speechless (well, after a lot of screaming and excited camera clicks). It was everything we’d hoped for and more.

We finally dragged ourselves back to the hotel at 5:30 AM—exhausted, frozen, and running purely on adrenaline. But was it worth every mile? Absolutely.
