"Eternal Light"

Flying over the North Shore of Kauaʻi last week near Tunnels Beach, the sunset brought some really beautiful light across the coastline. The soft glow and warm colors lit up the ocean, reef, and mountains perfectly, creating ideal conditions to capture this image from above. Aloha Nick Selway

Usually when I’m in Hawaii, I’m out in the water shooting waves up close. But on the North Shore of Oahu, with sets pushing 25–30 feet that evening, staying alive felt like the smarter option 😅. Instead, I sent the drone up and captured the waves crashing at sunset from above—an incredible perspective of the ocean’s raw power and beauty.

Sometimes you just get lucky. On my very first day on the Big Island, I had the incredible privilege of capturing this moment—a mother and her baby humpback whale swimming together in the wild. Encounters like this are a powerful reminder of how special and humbling it is to witness nature at its purest.

A week ago I returned home from Hawaii after leading a 17-day private photo tour for a client from Argentina and his wife. We began in Oahu, then traveled to Kauai, Maui, and finally the Big Island. After the workshop wrapped up, we stayed on the Big Island for another six days. I came home with a lot of new images to edit, but I thought I’d start with this one from Oahu.
Throughout the trip I flew my drone quite a bit, trying to capture unique perspectives of places and ocean scenes I’ve photographed many times before. While flying one day, I spotted this turtle swimming in crystal-clear shallow water. I was able to photograph it for about 20 minutes as it slowly cruised along the shoreline.
This ended up being one of my favorite shots from the entire trip.

I captured this image near Kit Carson, Colorado, back in May, and it remains one of the most amazing storms I’ve ever witnessed. As the sun slipped below the horizon, the sky ignited with energy and the atmosphere turned electric. Just as twilight settled in, a towering bolt of lightning ripped through the clouds.I feel incredibly fortunate to have been in the right place at the right time to capture this moment—huge thanks to Timothy Baca and Lauren Baca with Extreme Photo Tours for making this unforgettable experience possible.

Another surfboard heading out to a client in New York! I captured this image at Halemaʻumaʻu Crater in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park back in 2017. At the time, the crater would fill with lava, forming a lake that created massive cracks across the surface. The result was an incredibly dramatic and abstract landscape
