For years, I thought most of the magic happened when I picked up my camera at the session.

Through the prompts.
Through the games.
Through the interactions.

And yes of course of those absolutely matter, I’ve come to realize that some of the most important work happens long before I arrive.

Through the conversations.
Through preparing families.
Through helping them know what to expect.
Making sure they feel seen and cared for.

By the time we meet, we’re not starting from scratch.

We’re building on a foundation that’s already intentionally been created.

How we prepare our clients sets the tone for the session itself.

It’s a crucial step. Why?

Because it gives clients all the information they need prior to the session.

Details on the location, what to wear, how you handle wild kids… etc.

Taking the time to answer those questions, goes along way!

This is one of my favorite locations all year round!

In the spring, it has beautiful, lush green grass and wildflowers.

We’ve all been there… we get to a session and we can feel that our clients are nervous, more closed and guarded.

We feel a little panicked and try to compensate and get things on track, by over doing it…
Over directing
Over talking

Which sometimes makes things feel even more off.

What if your clients showed up already comfortable, open, relaxed, connected and ready?

That is not luck. That’s preparation.

“What if my kids don’t behave?”

This is a common concern.

I don’t expect kids to “behave” the entire session and neither should you.

I actually encourage parents to not “over discipline” during sessions, unless it is a safety concern of course!
If I have a prompt idea a child isn’t into it and refuses, that is OKAY! I simply pivot and try a new idea. I do not take it offensively, I do not think “wow these parents suck, their kids don’t even listen”. Promise!
I want to let kids be kids. That means share their opinions, be wild, run, play, ask a million questions, need to look at a super cool rock before moving onto the next thing, I want to allow the space for them to be themselves.

They do not need to perform. They do not need to listen to my every pose/prompt/game idea.

Their only job, is to have fun and be themselves.

I build sessions with kids in mind: play, movement, silliness, connection - not perfection.

Beauty happens in the chaos and it’s my joy to help you see it.
