The Nacoochee Mound, located just a couple of miles outside of Helen, GA, was the central point of a Native American village occupied for over 1,000 years by Muskogean-speaking people and later by the Cherokee. Evidence indicates that structures such as buildings and firepits once stood atop the various mound summits. An excavation of the mound in 1915 found that it was used as a cemetery, uncovering a range of artifacts dating from 800 to 1700 CE, such as pottery sherds, and beads, reflecting the difference in social status of the buried.
