Life can change quickly.

I found out I’ll be leaving on a disaster response deployment, and I’ll be gone for a few weeks.

Moments like this have a way of making everything clear… fast.

What feels ordinary isn’t guaranteed.
This moment you’re in right now is a gift.

Not because it’s perfect.
Because it’s been given.

The way they reach for you.
The weight of them in your arms.
The small, everyday things you don’t think twice about.

Those are the things you hold onto.

Even here, there is grace.

I’ll be stepping into something hard, but I trust where I’m being sent.
Right where I’m meant to be.

He doesn’t think twice about it.
He just reaches, grabs, tastes, studies.
Fingers wrapped tight around his toes.
That look on his face like this is serious work.
Like he’s trying to figure out what his own foot even is.

He sits there so steady now.
Still small, but not quite as new.
Everything right in front of him, and he’s paying attention to all of it.

The way he’s already becoming himself.
The in-between moments.

Six months in. And somehow, already, you’ll want it back.

Six months is a quiet kind of magic.

They’re not brand new anymore.
But they’re not running off just yet.

They study your face like they’re memorizing it.
Like they’re figuring out who you are to them.

They grab your hands without hesitation.
Like they’ve always known you.

They sit there, steady, but still reaching for you the second something feels unfamiliar.

And then there are the little things.

The way they tuck into you without thinking.
The way their whole body softens when you hold them.
The way they look at you like you are their whole world, because right now… you are.

That’s the part I pay attention to.

Not just what this stage looks like
but what it feels like to be in it.

This is why these sessions aren’t about poses or checklists.

It’s about noticing the things you don’t think to describe
but would feel the absence of later.

If you’re in this stage right now, don’t wait for the “perfect time.”

This is already it.

He had opinions from the very beginning. Including very strong feelings about being tired.
And he wasn’t subtle about any of them.
The scrunchy faces. The stretching. The way his whole body seemed to follow wherever his mood went next. One second completely settled, the next making it very clear he had something to say about it.
And his parents already knew.
The little looks they gave each other.
The way they passed him back and forth without thinking.
Like they were already fluent in him.
That’s what these early days feel like.
A little unsure.
A little overwhelming.
And somehow already completely yours.

It usually starts with sandy feet.

And then somehow turns into airplane rides that end in laughter before anyone’s ready for them to stop… and the inevitable “one more time” five seconds later.

Someone’s being carried.
Someone’s running.
Someone’s holding on a little tighter than they realize.

And for a second, everything slows down just enough that you forget there’s even a camera there.

That’s the part I’m watching for.

Not the perfectly timed smiles.
The part that actually feels like your family.

This is the one they end up framing.

Not because everyone looked perfect. Because everyone was actually there. Laughing too loud, squeezing too tight, not thinking about the camera at all.

That’s what I’m after every time.

Just a few weeks ago, he slept and slept and ate and slept and ate some more.
And here he is now—smiling, stars in his eyes for his mama, already curious about the world around him.
