Every August there's a phone call I dread a little. It comes in early December, from a lovely family, asking if there's any way to squeeze in a Santa session. And every year I have to say the words I hate saying: the calendar closed months ago.

They're never careless families. They're busy ones. September arrived, then Halloween, then suddenly the believing years had one less Christmas in them and no storybook to show for it.

Someone asked me this week why I only hold four Santa dates a season. Fair question — December is long, and I could certainly fill it.

Here's the honest answer: the storybook takes what it takes. Every child gets forty unhurried minutes in the workshop. Then every book is designed spread by spread, the poetry written around that child's visit, printed, gilded, and bound by hand in time for Christmas Eve. Four dates with a small number of commissions each is the most I can accept while keeping that promise to every single family.

Which is why I'll never pad the calendar — and why I'd rather tell you plainly: dates are filling now, and October 11 leads the way with 12 commissions remaining.
