Motherhood needs to be a choice. π»
I see rounded bellies and happily pregnant women as one of the most beautiful subjects I've photographed in my career. Photographed here , was so incredibly beautiful while pregnant. Her smile and happiness was extremely contagious. All that being said, it doesn't always happen that way. There are many reasons why people decide not to go through with a pregnancy and it's my strong opinion that they should have the freedom to make that decision.
Through my documentary work in hospitals and with doctors, I've been witness to many cases when the decision to get an abortion was the right one. I even have my own experience from a decade ago. I had been dating my girlfriend for only a few months when she got pregnant. We were overwhelmed by happiness and fear of the unknown. In my home country, the doctor never for a second had an opinion about whether or not we should go through with it. We were unsure if it was the right time for us and our doctor said that we should thoroughly discuss the options among ourselves and make that decision. Whether we want an abortion or not, he suggested to come back in one week and he will support whatever we decide.
It was a new relationship and both of our futures were extremely unclear. I was madly in love with her but we ultimately made the decision to terminate the pregnancy. It was not a decision we made lightly and it was extremely hard for both of us. I am so incredibly grateful that we had that option, as being co-parents at that time would have definitely changed our lives in ways that we didn't want.
No doctors, medical personnel or especially the government should ever have the right to make that decision or prohibit someone from getting help when it's needed. Access to abortion should be a universal human right and I urge all men that feel the same to speak up, this affects all of us.
