When summer heats up I often daydream back to the Antarctic season. This January we had so many bluebird skies it enhanced the feeling that it was all a dream. Though I will never forget the world’s most brutal sunburn, every 12 hour day out in the blinding white was worth it.

I knew you’d want more so I saved the best for last. How do you up the nostalgia further?? Roll in the tv cart that forever means ‘we’ve got a substitute teacher so it’s 100% Bill Nye time’

There’s costume changes, prop bits, a Wilhelm scream

And teaching you about genes in front of a wall of jeans, while wearing only jeans

I had the most fun

Thanks again to for the BTS video that I will cherish

is back in the lab!

I had a childhood dream come true when I got to work on set with Bill Nye ~the Science Guy~ for two days

Directed by the nostalgia genius – I photographed the stills for a web series that recently premiered four new episodes of Bill Nye’s classic science show. This time to teach everyone about Friedreich ataxia

There were smoking beakers, a puppet version of Bill, sound effects galore, and of course Mr. Bones. Aesthetically we went for hyper-saturated, wacky color, lots of grain so the images felt lifted straight out of a 90’s advert ( I could see these in Tiger Beat tbh )

I think I had a heart attack on day two when Bill, while playing around with a prop said, “Wait, where’s Michael?? He has to get this” Bill Nye knowing my name !? I’ve had a lot of delightful shoots in the past few years but this one was an all-time highlight

Thanks to / / / & for being the best collaborators and trusting me with this project

And of course for being my set buddy and capturing all the BTS

My drone made a few erratic noises in protest on this very windy morning in October. It was moments after sunrise and I stood on the edge of Lake Mohonk, a rare “sky lake” perched on a mountaintop and carved by a glacier thousands of years ago. As I sent it higher I turned the camera back on the Mohonk Mountain House, this Victorian-era vision from 1869. When the sun lifted above the lowest cloud on the horizon a jet of light began to fall across the lake. It only lasted about 5 minutes, but it gave this image the brilliance I was looking for.

The is now a National Historic Landmark that started as a humble ten-room tavern, eventually growing into the sprawling castle-like structure you see here.

In the second image you can see Skytop Tower, a stone lookout built in 1923 as a memorial to Albert Smiley. It serves as a navigational beacon for hikers and offers a 360-degree panorama of six different states on a clear day (for those about to Google, the answer is: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont)

These strange, windswept sculptures are not manmade. The ‘Zao Snow Monsters’ in Japan are a phenomenon created at the top of Mount Zao where fir trees get pelted with moisture from icy winds and get so encased that they begin to lean over, giving them the look of storybook monsters.

Featured in the World’s Best List for 2026 ~

As described in the article: “While some of Japan’s more popular destinations grapple with overtourism, mostly rural Yamagata Prefecture, roughly 200 miles north of Tokyo, offers moments of otherworldly quiet. Not even one percent of Japan’s visitors experience its sacred mountains, tranquil temples and shrines, and onsen villages.”

I arrived in Zao on my own in January of this year and was surrounded by snowbanks that were taller than myself. Steam from the hot springs wind through the town, casting a constant haze over every street. At night, it feels like you’re in a dream. To access the snow monsters, you take 2 ropeways and feel the temperature drop and drop.

I spent two days traveling up and down (the line for the ropeway can be quite long) and captured the monsters in varied lighting. Walking among them for hours they start to take on a presence in your peripheral vision. I remember asking myself, “did that one just move?”

The ‘Zao Snow Monsters’ in Japan are a phenomenon created at the top of Mount Zao where fir trees get pelted with moisture from icy winds and get so encased that they begin to lean over, giving them the look of storybook monsters.

I am very excited to share that my images of the monsters & the Yamagata prefecture are featured in the annual Best of the World for 2026. As described in the article: “As some of Japan’s more popular destinations grapple with overtourism, mostly rural Yamagata Prefecture, roughly 200 miles north of Tokyo, offers moments of otherworldly quiet. Special thanks to for all her support of this series
