I came here to practice seeing things, not just photographing them.
I've been starting most mornings the same way — coffee, walk to the fence, whatever's grazing that day. Some mornings it's cows. Some mornings it's horses. Most mornings I don't take a single photo.
I used to think that meant I was wasting the light. Now I think it's the opposite.
There's a version of looking that's really just scanning — waiting for something worth capturing. And there's another version that's slower, where you're not looking for anything, you're just letting a field be a field, an animal be an animal, until it stops being generic and starts being specific. The particular way this horse leans into wind. The exact green of moss that's been left alone for longer than I've been alive.
I think that second kind of looking is the actual skill. The camera just proves I did it.
I've been journaling most mornings too — not for content, just so the noticing has somewhere to go that isn't immediately a photograph. Some of it will probably turn into images eventually. Most of it won't. I'm trying to be okay with that.
If you've ever felt like you were moving through something beautiful too fast to actually take it in — that's the thing I'm trying to get better at. Not the photographing. The seeing.
