I always ask wedding clients what they are most excited to see in their gallery. More often than not, “candids” is a top priority. When a client says this is of the utmost importance to them, I know I’ll likely be a good photographer for their day.

As documentary photography has gained a lot of buzz, candids have become more requested, and for good reason! These photos feel the most authentic. They involve the least direction and the most comfort for the subject. I see candids are the essential piece to fully capturing the feeling of the day.

In my experience, the best candids require patience, awareness of group dynamics and personalities, and a willingness to make mistakes. You also need clients who are willing to trust you, give you the space to observe, and the time to be comfortable with your loved ones.

I’m forever grateful and excited by clients who get this. Who want to live fully in their celebration and trust I’ll be there to document it all. One such couple this year was Sophie & Quinn. Here’s a few of my favorites from their day that make me smile and take me straight back to May.

I love family sessions where little ones can be themselves, smiles aren’t required, play is encouraged, maybe a few dance moves are shown, and there is certainly a lot of laughter. I also love a multigenerational family session. With this crew we took a number of full group photos, but then made sure every smaller unit (siblings, immediate family, significant others, aunts, grandparents, etc) got a few snaps together. With this there was always someone to encourage, crack a joke, or hold a baby. It never felt stiff or forced, more like I got to join a really great group for an hour as we walked through the Arboretum.

Books are always open for family sessions that feel like this!

I’ve been enjoying spending less time on instagram these past few months. Like most things in my life, I find I’m most fulfilled when I lean into seasonality. Posting on this platform sometimes feels so natural(or natural enough) and other times it feels so completely forced. And when it comes to sharing images that are deeply personal, emotional, and tied to huge life moments for the clients I’m sharing, it feels like something to not force.

Often those times of social media feeling forced for me, coincides with time when creating work feels so natural. Perhaps it’s a little lesson in balance.

Anywho, that’s how these past months have felt. And now, at least right this very moment now, I’m feeling the pull to share a bit more of my work. My spring/early summer was absolutely packed in the best way with the best people. A time of very much leaning into my year’s mission of moving with intention, photographing with care and observing with curiosity. I’m so happy with the work made so far this year with this feeling at the center of it. Always more photos to share, as the moment feels right.

In the 100+ weddings I’ve photographed, never have I ever seen blackberries in a bride’s bouquet, a hot dog candle centerpiece, tomatoes on a bridesmaids dress, a mini horse named Tanya Tucker carry beers, or a show stopping karaoke reception.

Sarah + Bill’s wedding delivered all of the above and more. And from every guest I talked to, this wedding could not have been truer to them. Held at the gorgeous Saxony Farm where Sarah was raised, surrounded by friends and friends that were like family, it was full of absolute whimsy, color, creativity, and ease.

A big thank you to the amazing vendor team and a huge congrats to S + B!

What was supposed to be a rainy Philadelphia afternoon turned into a gorgeously moody geese-filled celebration of two people who have a long-established love and companionship.

Some of my favorite moments from Liz & Nick’s day include:
-Gorgeous florals by Liz’s dear friend
-My friend and former client, Jen officiating the ceremony
-Portraits amongst the trees where Nick & Liz regularly run
-Liz’s first look with friends
-Nick’s cross country students watching the ceremony from afar
-A group photo from across the river
-The Valley Green Inn’s utter sweetness
-Nick mid-reception outfit change

Clearly, it was a day that I adored, and this list could go on and on. All the weddings I’ve been to this year have been full of the absolute kindest people ever, and it held true for this celebration too.

Congratulations to the dearest Nick & Liz!

Where do I even begin to describe Sophie & Quinn’s wedding? Maybe by mentioning a bridesmaid who paid an Etsy witch to keep the rain at bay (it worked)! Maybe by saying some of their flowers were wildflowers they had picked from the side of the road. Perhaps by describing their ceremony exit included doing “the wave” that they tossed back to their officiant bestie.

No matter what part of the day or who was around, this was a couple who had surrounded themselves with people that were playful, caring, and kind. They really wanted to emphasize candid images and being present in their celebrations, which meant minimal posed portraits and a shorter than “standard” photo coverage. But their being in the moment and enjoying their loved ones wholeheartedly meant I had endless opportunities to capture the silly, open-hearted joy of the day.

Big congrats to S & Q! And thanks to this amazing vendor team:

Liza & Jacob’s intimate afternoon wedding with their nearest & dearest. The day was thoughtful, sweet, and joyful from their private prayers to a ribbon send off and all the moments in between.

I love the personality of these images, the play you can feel from the guests, and the deep connection these two sweeties have.

Congratulations L & J!

Big thanks to .cecilia for associate shooting this one for me!

Grad photos from April with Sophia!

So many sessions these past weeks which means I am too overwhelmed with gorgeous people to pick a few photos to share. An attempt to remedy that with this sweet graduation session at the Arboretum and Gray Design Building.

One of the greatest gifts of my life the past few years has been watching my friends become mothers. Seeing their capacity to be brave, silly, and caring. To see them advocate for their children and for the world they want their children to inherit amazes me. All while making sure everyone is fed and happy. It has also given me a beautiful lens to view all the many women who mothered me and continue to do so (my mom, aunts, parent friends, teachers, etc). I’m so thankful for moms and mothering.

I’d love to help you celebrate a mom you love this mothers day; be it your mother, a loved one who is a new mother, or someone who has mothered you. Book a gifted session this week and mention this post to receive a Mother’s Day discount, because moms deserve all the photos of themselves with their loved ones.

Perhaps a hot take for a photographer, but one of my favorite things about photographing Kentucky weddings is how green they are!! It feels so fresh, springy, and quintessential home to me.

Clayton and Angela’s wedding in 2023 had that gorgeous greeny spring glow that I will never tire of. So fun to look back on these images from a few years back. And to daydream about the cake that Angela baked herself!
