Today I want to talk about how I met the photography icon that is at the event this year.

I met Coreen and her daughter while photographing their booth showcasing Coreen’s jewelry line, The Black Cameo.

When we greeted each other, they were both warm and so inviting. We discovered that not only do Coreen and I share the same middle name, but we also share the same given last name.

We are both “Louise Rogers”. We could NOT believe it. This started a lovely conversation with Coreen in which she shared some of her trials and tribulations as a female African American Photographer in New York and beyond spanning over decades.

Coreen became one of a handful of female photographers on regular assignment covering the Fashion Collections in Paris and New York.

She shared with me that as a fashion photographer she was pushed around in the pit and had difficulties fighting for the shot with other photographers around her.

She had one very important person tell everyone to get out of her way and she was moved to the front. She never had an issue again after that!

This is how one voice with power can change the game for hard working and talented women like Coreen fighting for their right to take up space in a creative field where they absolutely belong.

Coreen’s work is astounding, culturally rich and vitally important. She is a true inspiration.

It was an honor to take her photograph and I will cherish these images for years to come.

📸 Her images have appeared in Vogue, Essence, Ms. Magazine, Paris Match, The New York Times, The Village Voice and numerous books and periodicals.
She is presently in the permanent collections at the Museum of Modern Art, The Bronx Museum, Le Musee De La Photographie (Belgium) and The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, among others.
