Bambi has been spotted on Jekyll Island 🏝️ 🦌

Coastal Whitetail Deer are abundant and healthy on Jekyll Island. It’s a safe haven for them to roam freely in maritime forest without the fear of predators or being hunted. Hunting is not permitted on the island. Whitetail Deer are usually elusive animals staying under the cover of the brush until dawn or twilight when they feed. But the deer on Jekyll Island can be seen almost anytime of the day. Females give birth to one to two fawns per season. They stay with their mother until they’re at least one year old. It’s a joy to be able to witness wildlife in an undisturbed habtat.

This Roseate Spoonbill is roosting in Brunswick, Ga. His/her’s age is somewhere between an adolescent and adult. You can tell its age from the loss of the white feathers on its head, revealing the greenish tint on its skin. It will eventually lose more feathers to reveal a blackish patch on its skin. As an adult, it will also develop a darker swath of pink on its wings and the bill will turn from a beige color to a blackish one. I’ve pasted an image of a fully mature Roseate Spoonbill in my comments.

Mr. Green Anole is showing off his pink throat fan to his girlfriend. Green Anole’s have chameleon-like abilities, such as being able to change its color hughes from browns to bright greens. They’re threatened by the invasive “Brown Anole”. Brown anoles are more aggressive, outcompete native green anoles for food, and prey on juvenile green anoles 😔

Radiant beauty on Jekyll Island 🏝️
Today the Great Egret thrives on Georgia’s Coast, but in the late 1800s the Great Egret was endangered due to massive hunting. Their beautiful breeding plumes were being used to adorn ladies’ hats. In 1953, the National Audubon Society adopted the Great Egret as their symbol to heighten the awareness to help prevent the killing of birds for their feathers.

I was photographing this American Alligator from the opposite end of the pond off of Crane Neck Trail. He let out a loud bellowing sound, which made me feel like he was right next to me—my reflex was to leap backwards and then fall onto my bum 😂🐊

Saw this beauty in Brunswick today. The Osprey has to be my favorite bird of prey. Unlike Bald Eagles who often steal other bird’s catch, the Osprey hunts for its own meal. Their diet is exclusively made up of live fish. They have a great ratio of success catching at least one fish in every four dives. Their unique outer toe is double-jointed enabling them to grasp two toes in front, and two toes behind the fish and have barbed pads on their soles which help them grip a floundering fish.
