It’s very fun to see photos in print these days, especially when they are of such a talented friend, and when they are printed in such a beautiful magazine!

Where Women Create’s Winter 2024 issue featured artist Cassi Ott in her Buffalo studio, along with 7 other women in their inspiring spaces. It’s a thick, vibrant, shiny publication.

Cassi wrote a really beautiful essay about her work and where she creates. I loved this part:

“It is natural to want to wait to share because I want the work to get just a little bit better, and for myself to get more established. But we are connecting here now, with me sharing where I am – even if I’m not yet all the way where I intend to go. In part, because I want to encourage you to keep taking steps and doing what’s yours to do. Because, to me, that is where the magic is.”

St Nicholas, considered the patron saint for children, arrives every December for Ukrainian kids, like he did at Dnipro, Buffalo’s Ukrainian cultural center last month. I remember these traditions as a kid: learning songs and short skits and waiting for the guy in the bishop’s robe and fake beard with his sack of presents. I always knew he was just some guy from church but the magic lingered.

In Buffalo, the huge ballroom (that is hand painted) was packed and everyone brought plates and platters of food for the celebration. Each kid had a role and a costume, and after all their hard work, the man made his big entrance flanked by angels. 🎁 it was a beautiful morning in such a special space.

Additional photographs taken Labor Day weekend at Soyuzivka, a Ukrainian heritage center in Kerhonksen, NY, in the Hudson Valley for The Picture Show.

A reminder that Ukraine has been under attack for 1000 days. Please support Ukraine.

1. Roxanne Boychuk, Kalyna Yurchuk and Alexa Symmons are friends who came annually for children’s camps, and this was their first year on their own visiting Soyuzivka during Labor Day weekend.
2. A folk painting propped up in the heritage center’s library.
3. A view from the ballroom overlooking the pool.
4. Inside the Ukrainian themed gift shop.
5. A serene pond area near the entrance to the center.

Today on The Picture Show, a piece about another Ukrainian enclave in New York State:

It’s special to dig into my childhood memories for spaces that influenced me, and to be able to share them with words and pictures as an adult.

It’s painful, however, to see the parallels in history. Ukrainians create community in response to war/dangerous leaders/dictators/oligarchs.

Soyuzivka, the site written about here, was founded by WW2 refugees, people like my grandparents. Today, beautiful Ukrainian friends still live through needless heartbreaking war. Please don’t forget about them.

Thank you to for photo editing and Zach Thompson for copy editing. I’m very grateful.

I’ll share more photos in coming days.

When I lived in Brooklyn the rush of humans always made me wonder what everyone was doing: what is driving them to run, sit for a moment, or cry in the streets? I was also always in a rush and never able to ask them. At that point as my younger self I was probably afraid to do so.

Meeting folks on the streets of Buffalo, though, has a sense of time expanding. I’m let into their big worlds for a minute, and for that I am grateful. Walking around with a camera can yield so many different comments but mostly it’s a mutual curiosity that is a gift.

Documenting families is a joy for me. It’s an exercise in gratitude, perspective, being present and letting go. When the outcome is for sharing, celebrating and adding to the archives, the pressure to find the right story weighs on me equally as it would for any other job. I am a libra after all, and this work balances me out. ⚖️

Thank you, Vanessa and Matt, for letting me into this piece of your lives for so many years now. I love watching the girls grow. ❤️

Front and center at my mom’s church hall recently for the Canadian Ukrainian dance troop, Barvinok. To dance like this is a labor of love and commitment, from athleticism to intricate costumes to traveling…what a treat to see.

Another selection from a North Buffalo summer walk, when friendly folks invited me into their backyard party to a lovely grandmother waiting for her family to those ever present swarms of gnats…and all those amazing faces and moments in between.

A warm night back in July in North Buffalo, when crowds gathered to listen to the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. Can you photograph us holding hands? they asked. ❤️
