My final outdoor session of the year was incredibly special. I was already excited to photograph this wonderful family, but then they threw in a last-minute plot twist: Grandpa was joining!
He ended up stealing the show completely. Watching him with his family was pure magic and reminded me so much of the strong, kind elder men I grew up surrounded by in my family and at church.
Documenting these interactions brought me so much joy because I know that someday, these photos will serve as vital “reference memories” for this family.
This week I lost my own grandfather, my last remaining grandparent, and I have a renewed appreciation for these moments. It’s a tough but necessary reminder of how important it is to photograph our elders. Don’t wait for the “perfect” time. Just take the picture. These memories are priceless.
