I'll admit, I was kind of terrified we were all going to be struck by lightning... ⚡️

I was shooting at a ranch a few years ago when a big electrical storm blew in. Instead of heading for cover, we took a few moments to see if we could capture lightning with a cowboy in the shot.

I kept missing the lightning, and I was growing more nervous.

Then I remembered that you need a slow shutter speed to capture lightning. But horses don't usually stand very still, so a slow shutter speed rarely works.

But this very chill horse and rider stood perfectly still long enough for me to capture this image at 1/50th of a second with a 35mm lens!

Despite the blue skies, rain was approaching, and fast! "Making hay while the sun shines" is more than just an idiom for hay farmers.

Last week, I spent an afternoon in a hay field, cameras and drone in hand, photographing a farmer as he baled hay. This is the part of the equine industry most people never see, making it some of my favorite work to document.

Every flake of hay your horse eats starts in a field like this. The cutting, the curing, the race against the weather. It's the foundation of equine nutrition, and it rarely gets documented well.

The drone caught the sweeping windrows and the scale of the work. My cameras caught the texture, the precision, and my favorite, the bales being launched into the hay rack.

You can almost smell this post, right?

It never gets old, walking into my local feed store and seeing my own photos on the packaging. Unbeetable Feeds has been updating its packaging over the past year, and they licensed my images for the new look.

And now I'm also a customer! My 34-year-old mare, Maggie Sue, needs a little extra forage as part of her nutrition plan, so the Original product has become a regular addition to what she's already eating. The alfalfa, beet pulp, and flax round things out nicely, and they help keep her happy and healthy.

There are times when I take a photo, and I just know it's going to do well in my stock library. That's exactly what I think happened this weekend.

I was on location for an editorial shoot for Young Rider Magazine when this dun Quarter Horse started doing laps in the pasture behind me. I turned my camera on him and caught this dynamic image!

Did you know that early in my career, I worked as a graphic and web designer at an advertising agency? I think it's part of the reason why I love silhouettes so much. Since they are primarily just shapes, putting together a scene is mostly about composition and layout.

But then there are always those things you can't design for but just happen magically, like one cowboy's rope perfectly framing the other cowboy and his horse!
