As I was researching locations in Phoenix to take good desert Arizona sunset pictures, the Dobbins Lookout rose to the top. I left at 4:30 PM anticipating the right time to catch the last rays of the day. As I approached the top of the lookout, the cars began go back up with limitted parking at the top. Each inch closer left me with anxiety that i would miss the coveted timing. Just as I got to the lot, someone pulled out of a parking space and then i knew with gratitude I made it!

I woke at 12:30 a.m. to the sound of a passing storm, the kind that leaves the desert hushed and expectant. Sleep didn’t easily return, so I began mapping out the morning—where to hike, how the light might fall, and which trail would reveal something special at first light.

By sunrise, the air along the Bell Rock Pathway felt cool and alive, the earth still damp from the night’s rain. The desert carried that rare freshness that only follows a storm—subtle, clean, and full of promise. As the sun began to rise behind Courthouse Butte, soft light spilled across the red rock, illuminating the textures and deepening the rich tones of the landscape.

Then I came upon this quiet wash along the trail—reflections forming in the lingering pools, sandstone glowing in the early light. It was one of those moments when preparation meets surprise, and the scene quietly exceeds every expectation.

Arizona Sunsets — February 15, 2026

I used to think all sunsets were created equal — until this evening.

My wife Rhonda, who grew up in Mesa, has always said Arizona sunsets are the best. After standing on the summit at Dobbins Lookout watching the sky ignite in layers of gold, crimson, and orange, I finally have to admit… she was right.

The drive up the mountain was lined with cars, and for a moment I thought I’d miss that fleeting golden hour light. But sometimes the desert rewards persistence — just as I reached the top, someone pulled out of a parking space. Perfect timing.

Here’s to you, honey — and to Arizona skies that never disappoint.

Mt Blue Sky Series

Clear Creek County, Colorado, USA.... taken July 18, 2020
A bit of history, Mt Blue Sky was called by a different name of Mt Evans (I climbed this 14'r in 2020 on a bike), named after a governor of the Territory of Colorado in the 1860's. Because of his involvement in the Sand Creek Massacre, the 14,266 foot peak was renamed to Mt Blue Sky in 2023 symbolizing healing and cultural respect, honoring Indigenous traditions like the Cheyenne Blue Sky ceremony and the Arapaho's "Blue Sky People" identity. Mt Blue Sky

Summit Lake.
Clear Creek County, Colorado, USA....taken July 18, 2020
I have climbed Mt Blue Sky (14,266' elevation) a number of times and found the climb on my bike very challenging. The ride is more special when a friend joins you in the agony.
