First off, happy Labor Day! Today's holiday marks an important recognition of the American labor movement and the accomplishments and contributions of this country's workers. Now, to the photos: A few weeks ago I ventured to the Lake Champlain waterfront in Burlington, Vermont, for a late-summer sunrise. I had hoped to capture the setting full moon, too, and barely managed to squeeze off a couple quick frames right after I arrived before the bright moon vanished behind the clouds, never to be seen again (this particular morning, anyway). The clouds themselves proved fascinating, moving and changing colors in a host of layers from right over the north breakwater lighthouse to fog-like wisps that clung to the Adirondacks across the water in New York. One more image to close out my coverage of last week's near-total lunar eclipse as seen from South Burlington, Vermont. This composite shows the progression of Earth's shadow across the lunar surface, peaking at 96.2% coverage, from the start of the eclipse at 10:33 p.m. Aug. 27 and ending at 1:52 a.m. Aug. 28. As you can see from this sequence, the shadow doesn't move in a linear fashion but more like a curve; this is due to Earth's rotation over the duration of the eclipse.

Phases of the eclipse over the legendary Whales Tails sculpture "Reverence" last week in South Burlington, Vermont. The seven moons in this composite photo capture the duration of the 3 hour and 20 minute passage of Earth's shadow across the lunar surface, beginning when the dark umbra first made contact with the lower left portion of the moon at 10:33 p.m. Aug. 27, continuing through the deepest moment of 96.2% coverage and the attendant red hue at 12:13 a.m. Aug. 28, and ending just before the shadow departed at 1:52 a.m. from the moon's lower right limb.

Jim Sardonis' sculpture sits atop a hill, so by lying flat on the grass and keeping my camera on the ground, I was able to shoot at a steep upward angle to reduce the visual distance between the black granite artwork and the moon. The moon at peak eclipse is positioned in the same spot where it appeared in the sky in my straight-from-the-camera single photo that served as the base for this composite. I then layered in separate images of the various eclipse phases roughly following the moon's arc-like transit across the sky.

A week ago tonight all but 3% of the lunar surface turned a coppery red as the moon plunged into Earth's shadow during an eclipse visible across North America. A cloudy day here in Vermont fortuitously ended with clearing skies in northwestern portions of the state, with only high, thin wisps through which the moon, even when eclipsed, had no trouble shining. This photo is the most detailed image of a lunar eclipse I've ever captured. Using a telephoto lens and a 2x converter my friend Umesh generously let me borrow, I shot a rapid sequence of seven images at 1000mm about 30 minutes after the deepest part of the eclipse. Each image used a different exposure level, preserving detail and color in the deep red shadow and in the much brighter sunlit surface. Then I combined all seven images into this final scene. The glow around the moon comes from light refracting off the icy clouds high in the atmosphere.

As summer begins to fade away, I'm taking a look back at several favorite images that I hadn't previously found time to share. I'm starting with this giant panorama of a gorgeous late-July evening in northwestern Vermont when the setting sun and broken clouds combined to create a stunning array of golden crepuscular rays shining down on Lake Champlain's Malletts Bay in Colchester. Good morning and welcome to September — the start of meteorological fall! Soon we'll be enjoying a landscape resplendent with colorful foliage, hoodie-weather nights, orchards brimming with apples, pumpkin spice everything, and so much more! I can't wait! In the meantime, though, we're still soaking up those last warm rays of summer sunshine. Along those lines, here's a quartet of images from this past Friday's delightful sunset over Lake Champlain as seen from Shelburne, Vermont. These images feature a southwestern aerial perspective on the lake and the Adirondacks; New York's Whiteface Mountain sporting a perfectly positioned ribbon of cloud so the high peak resembles a steaming volcano; a giant vertical panorama of the Adirondacks under a magnificent sky; and Vermont's Camels Hump looking stately towering above a field of tall corn and wearing a veil of pink-tinged twilight clouds. Friday's gorgeous sunset in northwestern Vermont's Champlain Valley had just about everything a landscape photographer could want — except for a break in the clouds to the east to catch the rising full moon. Alas! But with a consolation prize this stupendous, it was hard to go away disappointed.
