Welcome to The Rookery Photography by Pamela Hammonds
I grew up in a single-story house outside of Muncie, Indiana, and ever since childhood, my dream was to live in a two-story house in a city or suburb to raise my own kids where they would each have their own bedroom, friends close by, and sidewalks for riding bikes. I accomplished that dream but still had an itch I couldn't scratch. When we did a lease-to-own for a lesson pony my daughter loved, a door seemed to open: maybe a return to the lifestyle I had always wanted to get away from was what I needed. We found a five-acre property in a ranch neighborhood in Burnet, Texas, and started building a home for a newly realized dream.
After we moved in, I began work on creating a little cove for wildlife on my property, and very quickly our yard became a haven for all sorts of wildlife, from songbirds and turkey vultures, to black-tailed hares, skunks, coyotes, and even more native bugs! When my daughter came home, she described the place as a rookery, and the name just fit.
In the intervening years, I have been honing my lifelong photography skill on our horses, donkey, dogs, kitten, and the aforementioned interlopers who frequent my place. I love the outdoors, am so happy to be back in a place that feels like home, and am so excited to help you capture the beauty found in the collaboration between human and nature.
