The first commandment does not begin with a command.

It begins with a sentence most people skip right past. And that sentence changes everything about what God is actually asking for.

Zev Clark () said something about neuroscience and the first commandment that I could not stop thinking about. He is right. And the text goes somewhere the science cannot follow.

The Bible Project's series opened this season of study a few weeks back. What I found underneath it made me think deeply.

The throne was never empty. And the one who belongs on it proved it before he asked for anything.

"It is a picture of what it looks like to hold hope in the body. Not as an idea. Not as a theological proposition about what God can do. As a daily, physical, unreasonable orientation toward a horizon that has given you no recent evidence to justify the watching."

Ouch... this one was... difficult.

There is someone/thing you have not stopped watching for.
You know who/what it is.

The watching feels unreasonable some days. It asks you quietly whether hope is faith or foolishness. Whether the road is going to stay empty long enough that you should stop standing where you can see it.

God does not waste the watching.

The father was already looking. So are you. And so is He.

I watched a shark video with my family recently and laughed for 52 seconds straight.

"Murder torpedoes. Sea puppers. Happy flappy chainsaw. Mega-mega-nope fish."

Then the full diagram pulled back. Every image, every label, every branching connector. A completely built out Lucidchart diagram. Their actual product. Their actual interface. From frame one.

Three words at the end. Made by Lucid.

I have used for years. It is genuinely good software. But I had never felt it the way I felt it in that moment. Because they did not show me a demo. They put me inside one before I knew I was in it.

Most brands tell you what their product does. This one made you experience it before you decided whether you cared.

The question is not how your brand can be more entertaining. It is whether your product itself, used unexpectedly, could be the entertainment.

The answer is already in there somewhere. The only question is whether anyone in the building has been given permission to find it.

The Fourth of July always feels like a day of celebration, but also a day that asks something of us.

Gratitude is easy to post.
Humility is harder to practice.

Freedom gives us room to build, worship, speak, create, lead, serve, gather, and tell the truth.

But freedom was never meant to make us louder for our own sake. It was meant to make us more responsible with what we have been given.

“For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.” - Galatians 5:13

That verse has been sitting with me today.

Because the best stories are rarely about self promotion.
They are about service.

The leader trying to communicate with integrity.
The organization trying to serve people well.
The family trying to preserve what love has built.
The community trying to remember what should not be forgotten.

That is the kind of storytelling I want SamuelJon Media to be known for.

Clear.
Human.
Honest.
Useful.

A way of helping people and organizations communicate what matters, not just add more noise to the world.

That feels fitting for this weekend.

They are layered, human, and worth remembering.

There’s a version of faith that lives on a scoreboard.

Good day, you feel close to God. Bad day, you feel like you’ve forfeited Him. Quiet time in, temper kept, scripture read, blessing earned. Snapped at your kid, skipped the prayer, lost the morning to scrolling, blessing lost. It’s exhausting, and it’s not the gospel. It’s performance wearing a Bible verse.

Jerry Bridges named this trap decades ago in The Discipline of Grace, and the line has outlived every trend since: your worst days are never so bad that you’re beyond the reach of God’s grace, and your best days are never so good that you’re beyond the need of it.

That’s not permission to coast. It’s the only foundation strong enough to actually build on. You don’t get to earn your way in on a good day, and you don’t get locked out on a bad one. Grace was never a reward for performance. It’s the ground you’re already standing on.

Whatever kind of day you’re having, that hasn’t changed.

Three months ago I sat across from a family and asked them to tell me about their son.

Not how he was lost. Who he was going to be. What they'd already named him. What they'd already imagined for him.

That conversation became the first episode of A Seat at the Table, a documentary series I'm producing through Manny's Fund, a nonprofit my family started in memory of our own son, Manny.

Here's the part that still gets me. Before their own episode was even finished, that first family gave back. They funded part of a stranger's story, a family they had never met, simply because they believed the next one deserved the same thing they got.

That is the whole point of this series in one gesture.

We are now raising funds to film the next 10 families. Every dollar goes directly to production, nothing else. If you have ever lost someone and felt the world rush past that loss too quickly, you understand exactly why this matters.

You don't need to fund an entire episode. $10, $20, whatever you can do adds up alongside everyone else chipping in, and it gets us closer with every gift.

God asked Adam a question that still finds us hiding.

“Who told you that you were naked?”

Not, what did you do?
Not first.

Who told you that?

Because shame usually has a source.

A voice.
A wound.
A room.
A failure.
A sentence we heard once and spent years treating like truth.

Too much.
Not enough.
Too late.
Disqualified.
Hard to love.
Too far gone.

But Genesis 3 is not only about what Adam did.

It is about the voice Adam started believing after he did it.

And God refuses to let the serpent become the final narrator of the man made in His image.
