If you were at The Mane Event Center on Saturday for the Surf Into Summer Event and you did not stay for the special events that followed the race, you really missed out.

Immediately after the Poles there were 2, or shall I say 3 events that Hannah planned that tied in with this weekends race theme, Surf Into Summer.

The first represented the theme very well, Cowboy Surfing. It is exactly what it sounds like, a bunch of cowboys and cowgirls or in this case, barrel racers, racing thru arena dirt to turn a barrel riding a surf board and being pulled by a horse. Who by the way is the best boy, Buster Brown. Of course it was a timed event, afterall these cowboys and cowgirls are barrel racers and they can make anything into a race around a barrel.

Then the second event brought in a little more of the theme as well as the Hawaiian tradition of handcrafting Lei Po’o instructed by the very talented Irina Vasiljevic Young. A Lei Po’o is a traditional Hawaiian floral crown worn on the head, handcrafted by braiding fresh flowers and foliage into a natural base. Those who attended the workshop made the most beautiful floral braidings, which of course made for the absolutely PERFECT opportunity to combine this Hawaiian craft taught by Irina and my photography to give a very unique and memorable keepsake.

Here is just a little sneak peek of some of the images from the Lei Po’o workshop and some special images I captured.

at The Mane Event Center - Russellville MO is today and I will be there capturing whatever catches my eye.

So, if you are there and wearing anything with a Hawaiian, beach or surfing kinda vibe, you will probably catch my eye.

Somethings stop me dead in my tracks!!

Driving, daydreaming and lost in thought when I catch a glimpse of a horse grazing in a field in the distance. His dark bay color against the green of the field and the setting sun shining down was all it took for me to stop dead in my tracks and grab my camera.

When I looked thru the lens it was like seeing a magical Unicorn grazing in a dreamy field with the sun peeking thru the trees. Yes, I know that is probably my creative imagination at play, but it works for me.

I am always looking for the unexpected and I think I just might need a bumper sticker that reads, “Caution: This truck makes unexpected stops to capture the beautiful horses”

Side note: after zooming in on the Unicorn, I recognized the brand that identified who he belongs to and had to smile since he was not at her place and I had no idea who this beauty was that stopped me in my tracks until I zoomed in. Hannah Kaufman Performance Horses

One of the things I appreciate most is, the moment I walked away, something inside me whispered, “Turn around, it’s not over yet!!”

Capturing the little things, the unseen moments that can tell a story or show emotion without intent are just a few ways I try to express my connection to photography and the subject I focus on.

Photography is a work of art, it is personal and it is selective but it is soo much more to the person in front of and behind the lens.
