Photography 101

Under U.S. copyright law, payment is for the service and the agreed deliverables (such as edited photos, albums, or digital files), not the copyright, unless your contract specifically says the copyright is being transferred.

For example:

* Scenario 1 (most wedding photographers):
* Client pays $3,000 for wedding photography.
* Photographer delivers 500 edited images.
* Photographer owns the copyright.
* Client receives a license to use the photos for personal purposes (printing, sharing with family, posting on social media).
* Scenario 2 (copyright transferred):
* The contract expressly states that the photographer assigns all copyrights to the client.
* Client owns the copyright.
* Photographer can no longer use the images unless the client grants permission.
