My recent visit to Shaniko its like walking back in time. Shaniko is an old West ghost town in north central Oregon.It sits along hy 97.But its fun to explore the preserved wooden bulidings,a historic hotel ,and the old jail.In the 1900s the Columbia Sourthern railway built a line to the area.By 1910 the population was 600.However a rival railroad built shortly after bypassing Shaniko completly.Businesses closed and the town became a ghost town.There still about 30 residents who live there now.
I love all the wildlife here mostly deer and variety of birds.And the open skies beautiful sunrises and sunsets.

WHAT A NIGHT
I was out at Smith Rock Central Oregons high desert ,July 3rd 2026.
Earlier in the day, I was making pictures with the Smith Rock eagle family.Hoping to catch the eaglet flying. Didnt happen so I decided to try again early morning and just car camp for the night. It was about 11:30 pm I was all snug in my sleeping bag starting to drift off to sleep . I wanted to be back with the eagles at daylight.
All of a sudden my aurora alerts were going off .I jumped up and there it was! I could barely see it with my eyes but my camera was picking it up.It was beautiful. I was out until 4 am finding different compositions . Then the moon not quite full it looked huge as it began rising , the moonlight was illuminating the Smith rock cliffs . It was beyond beautiful .
I was exhausted daylight was about an hour away. I did get about a hour sleep and decided I would just come back in couple days to catch the eaglet Phoenix in flight. I needed to get back home to get some sleep, and spend the 4 th with my family.
But what a unexexpected treat.

Watching and photographing the Smith Rock Eagle Family,Hunter(dad)Skye(mom)Phoenix(eaglet) has been a powerful and deeply moving experience.The fragil chick learns to trust his wings. Ive been watching the young eagle practice flapping its wings which builds excitement and anticipation in me as a photographer, and in awe at Gods creation.
He is 78 days old I believe today July 3 2026
I just got back once again from Smith Rock he still hasnt flew from the nest , but catching some good air😀maybe next week ! going back Sunday and staying until he flys!!!!!!
I just heard from another photographer yesterday Phoenix had an accidental fladge! So he may have flown already. I gotta get back there.!!

Smith Rock Family of Eagles that I have been observing and photographing, in Central Oregon.Started when baby Phoenix was roughly 7 days old.Here he is 64 days old .Hoping to catch him in flight next week. I live 2 and 1/2 hours away. I think of him or her often,and cant wait to get back to the ponderosa nest.

The Smith Rock Eagle Family
Hunter (DAD) SKYE (MOM) Phoenix (EAGLET)
My baby boy or girl is getting so big 64 days old.
I have been photographing this family from almost his birth. Its been amazing watching him grow and the interactions, feeding ,hunting ,and teaching from parents. Something I will never forget. Going back next week hoping to capture his first flight maybe even blessed with his first hunt.
