Sometimes, it’s the simplest things, things that often times go unnoticed, that restore me. I stood and watched as the seeds from a recently opened Milkweed pod bathed in the sunlight and danced with the breeze, and I just couldn’t help but smile.

Mark your calendars for Landscaping with Native Plants Garden Tour with Master Naturalist Lyle White!

🌻Thursday August 8, 2024

🌻Touch of Nature- 1206 Touch of Nature Rd, Makanda, IL 62958

🥾This will be a walking tour of three gardens at Touch of Nature with Master Naturalist, Lyle White, to learn why he made the switch to improving the site's landscaping with native plants. Each garden has origins linked to unique goals including education demonstration, erosion control and reduction of mowing, historical ethnobotany, and preserving rare flora of southern Illinois.

🐝Be inspired to make the switch in your own backyard.
🦋Kimberly Rohling, Horticulture Educator, has been an adviser at this garden site and will be available at the program to assist with answering questions along the way.

At rest.

Today is the final day of National Moth week so I didn’t want to miss the chance to share!

One of my favorite and very busy visitors to my garden is the Hummingbird Moth! Usually, photographing them can be quite the challenge, but this guy took it easy on me!

Learned something new today.

Did you know bees can get stuck in Milkweed?! Milkweed produces Pollinia, a sticky pollen sack, which bees can get trapped in.

When I went to check on my plants this morning, I observed this little guy desperately trying to get free. After a few minutes of unsuccessful attempts, and growing more exasperated, I intervened and was able to help him.

I know one of the major reasons I’ve been down in the photography dumps is because my summer muse has evaded me. I haven’t seen a single Monarch butterfly this season, and my heart is just completely crushed. I revisit all my milkweed plants every day, (sometimes more than once) hoping that I’ll see an egg, a caterpillar munching away, or really any sign at all that I’ve had a visitor.
