The beach. Let’s talk about it! I’ve been shooting on the coast my whole career and there are certain patterns I see with families that I think are important to share. Now that I am mom to two crazy kids, one with sensory processing, I see locations with a totally different lens. Locations provide the space for kids to thrive or melt. It’s so important that you pick one that sets your family up for photo success. I love the beach but I rarely take my own family photos there, it’s not a spot where my kids thrive for photos. They’re too comfortable, it’s too sensory inviting so I save it for fun days instead of photos. Plus my hair, don’t even get me started. But when we do shoot there, my expectations as a mom are completely different. I am not trying to persuade anyone from shooting at the beach, I love it so much, I just want parents to make a fully informed choice that gives them the best photos they can have. So here’s hoping I’ll see your smiling faces and bare toes on the sand soon!✨

Boyhood. It’s not something I ever thought I would experience but here I am, in the thick of it. Spending time with other families in similar chapters is always so validating and heartwarming. It’s a nice reminder that you’re not in it alone. And yes, they are all very busy and wild and funny and sweet and curious. I’m always so proud when they come out to play, breaking cycles of future grumpy dads and normalizing photo shoots being a fun adventure!

I’ll never forget my biggest fear about moving was finding all my locations. How do you move your office when your office is the different parks and beaches where you live? So I made it my job to scout. I went to every beach, every big green spot on the map, every trail, trying to find my new office. And looking back now, I think it’s safe to say it was an improvement. San Diego, you really are beautiful.

Would you ever guess we were dripping sweat, navigating a packed beach with a grumpy toddler and a curious pup? Sometimes sessions feel harder than others. Maybe it’s an off day, wonky timing, skipped naps or just challenging ages for your kiddos. But you are always safe with me. One of things I love about this job is knowing that sometimes the gallery I send off will completely overshadow how the session felt. Not every session is easy breezy. I’ve been there, I’ve left a shoot feeling like I hope they got something because that felt crazy. Just know, I got you. It’s my job to shift the energy around and regulate everyone. It’s the highlight reel, a polished version of the day and that’s ok. Both can be true, the photoshoot can feel hard and you can still make beautiful photos. Because just like in everyday life, there so much love and beauty mixed in with the chaos.

The sweetest golden afternoon with this crew. It’s so funny that I used to avoid green grass back in the day, I’ve come a long way! Now I really embrace the colors of the day. And honestly, when everything starts to get brown and dead during the Fall, a boost of color feels like a breath of fresh air! This spot is so fun, still have a couple openings here. I was heading to a mini day a few weeks back and I realized that I was so nervous. This is my 15th holiday season, I’ve seen it all and feel confident in my ability to handle any curve balls but I still feel anxious. I still feel a lot of things. Every Fall I stumble and learn. Every Fall I grow and evolve. And in all honesty, at the end, I’m usually completely burnout but that’s only because it’s a season with a very full cup. It made me realize how far I’ve come, but also how much of the things I felt in the early days I still feel today. What is something you still feel as a photographer?

Mini season is officially off and running! So far it’s been a blast despite a lot of hiccups and pivots, every single family has come ready to play. This sweet crew was new to me and they were an absolute dream! Sometimes I look back at a gallery and can’t believe we made it all happen in such a short period of time. Those days just feel like a golden blur. But then I remember so sore I am and how I run around like a crazy person the whole time. Worth it. Always.✨
