🦞 How long does it take a heron to eat a crawdad?

Watch until the end for the answer. 👀

I watched this heron catch a crawdad and then begin the process. The crawdad wasn't giving up easily, waving those pincers around and trying to hang on while the heron repeatedly tossed it, repositioned it, and worked to subdue it.

For a minute, it looked like a wrestling match more than a meal.

The heron eventually got the upper hand, likely removing or crushing the pincers before turning the crawdad headfirst and swallowing it whole.

Nature can be fascinating, brutal, and impressive all at the same time. This little drama played out in just one minute, but there was

The beach was nearly silent that night, just the steady rhythm of waves folding into the shore. I stood at the top of the weathered wooden steps, looking into the dark where ocean disappears and sky begins. As my eyes adjusted the Milky Way revealed itself, stretching in a soft arc while the water picked up just enough light to echo it. The steps felt like an invitation, a small path from the sand into something much bigger, so I let a little light fall across the foreground to mark the way. For a moment it felt like standing between two infinities. See it here: https://www.koralmartin.com/photography/art_print_products/milkyway-beach-steps-8183

One of the things I loved most about hiking near Kebler Pass was how quickly the landscape seemed to change with every turn in the trail. Along Dark Canyon Trail, I came across this beautiful Aspen grove where the trees in the foreground were still holding onto their rich green leaves, while deeper into the grove the aspens had already turned brilliant gold. It felt like watching summer and fall meet in the same scene.

What really pulled me in was the fallen Aspen stretching into the grove, almost like nature had laid out a path inviting you to wander farther beneath the glowing trees. The light filtering through the leaves, the mix of colors, and the quiet mountain air made this one of those places where I just stopped for a while to take it all in. Colorado in the fall truly has a magic all its own.. See it here: https://www.koralmartin.com/photography/art_print_products/aspen-grove-dark-canyon-4408

At Reelfoot Lake I watched cypress crowns lean over the water while a white egret balanced on a fallen branch. The late light picked out warm bands on the trunk and the bird’s pale silhouette felt like a quiet punctuation in the scene. Egrets are common in summer but very shy and hard to see up close, so this was a small moment that stayed with me. One morning at Reelfoot Lake an egret folded into a pose I had never seen before and it made me laugh. Reelfoot is full of water birds and birds of prey, and the best way I’ve found to be close to them is drifting out on the water in my kayak. That quiet moment—neck curved, beak tucked beneath the feathers against the cedar and moss—felt private and oddly calm. 🎶 Big Crawdad 🎶

There’s always something happening out in the wetlands if you slow down long enough to watch. This morning started peacefully with egrets and a Great Blue Heron moving through the shallows… then the hunt was on.

One egret snagged a tiny minnow, but another struck gold with a BIG crawdad! Watching these birds stalk, chase, and finally score a meal is such a fun reminder that the marsh is full of nonstop drama.

I even made an AI song for this reel called Big Crawdad to go along with the action. 😄 Turn the sound up and enjoy a little wetland entertainment from the birds’ breakfast buffet!

On an early morning hike through the prairie, heavy dew turned the grasses into a little sparkling world. I bent down to a purple spiderwort tucked beneath a curved, striped leaf, droplets clinging like tiny glass orbs and catching miniature reflections of the greenery beyond. The three delicate petals and the small cluster of golden anthers felt quietly alive—a simple moment that made the walk worth it. On a visit to Reelfoot Lake I spotted an osprey settled in a cypress nest with its chicks huddled close. The adult’s steady profile and a chick’s wide, bright eye made the moment feel quietly protective and alert. Warm browns of feathers and rough twigs set against a clear blue sky gave the scene a calm clarity I wanted to hold onto. On the Snodgrass Trail near Crested Butte I walked through a sunlit meadow where lupine and wildflower blooms rose from warm grasses and a dark band of evergreens led my eye toward distant ridges. The view moved from near to far in a steady sweep that kept me wanting to move forward into its beauty. This was a favorite hike from that Colorado trip; around every bend there was more to notice. Do you have any favorite trails in Colorado that you would share with me. Always looking!
