My Favorite Places - Red Bank Battlefield

Location : 100 Hessian Ave, National Park, NJ 08063

The location of the Battle of Red Bank was fought at this American Revolutionary War location on October 22, 1777.

Fort Mercer and its sister, Fort Mifflin in Pennsylvania, defended the river and prevented the British from using it for transportation. The forts successfully delayed the British, but in the end, they were both destroyed or abandoned.

Today the site of the Battle of Red Bank still has the trenches and cannons used by the roughly 500 American soldiers fighting against 2000 British and Hessian soldiers. The Whitall House is an original home that was there during the battle and was used as a field hospital. It is open for tours today. The site is a part of the Gloucester County Parks system.

Back in May I visited another historic site from the Revolutionary War.

On this cool spring day I paid a visit to a major battle site
Of the American Revolutionary War, Although the battle area covered more than ten square miles, or 35,000 acres, the modern park only covers the fifty acres that served primarily as the Continental encampment during the two days prior to the battle.

I was able to explore the museum and General Washington’s headquarters (the Benjamin Ring House) Lafayette’s quarters (Gideon Gilpin's farmhouse) was closed at the time for renovations.

The battle was fought on September 11, 1777, during the American Revolution, and was a decisive victory for the British and cleared a path directly to the rebel capital of Philadelphia.

While it was a decisive defeat, the Continental Army stood toe-to-toe with elite British troops and survived with their morale intact. The delay bought enough time for the Continental Congress to safely flee Philadelphia.

My Favorite Places : Gabreil Daveis Tavern
Location : 500 3rd Ave, Glendora, NJ 08029
This historic tavern, built in 1756, is situated in Glendora within modern-day Gloucester Township, NJ, in Camden County, along Big Timber Creek.

During the Revolutionary War the tavern was designated as a hospital by George Washington during the war.

The property is listed on both It was listed in the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Historic Preservation Office in 1973 and the National Register of Historic Places in 1977

Today is served a a museum and host several special events throughout the year.
