**From the Archives: 2010 📷**

Sometimes a photograph is about the big picture, and sometimes it's about the small detail right in front of you.

Both of these photos were taken from the same balcony overlooking the lake in 2010. One captures the wider view—the water, boats, docks, and shoreline in the distance. The other focuses on the flowers and American flag sitting on the balcony, using that same lake as a softly blurred background.

Looking back at photos from more than 15 years ago is an interesting reminder that photography has always been about perspective—choosing what to include, what to leave out, and what catches your eye.

A Drive Along the Blue Ridge Parkway ⛰️

A look back at a trip from a few years ago when I explored part of the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina, traveling through the Cherokee and Asheville area.

This stop marks the highest elevation along the Blue Ridge Parkway motor road at 6,053 feet. Between the elevation, mountain scenery, and winding road, this section of the Parkway made for a memorable drive—and plenty of opportunities to stop with the camera.

I've only explored this portion of the Parkway so far, but I'd love to eventually make the trip along the entire route and see how the landscape changes along the way.

Fireworks in the Blue Ridge 🎆

While visiting the Blue Ridge area over the Fourth of July, I had the opportunity to get back into fireworks photography—something I've done before.

Fireworks are always an interesting subject to photograph. You have to anticipate where the next burst will appear while balancing shutter speed, exposure, focus, and timing. There's definitely some trial and error involved, especially when every burst is different.

It was great getting behind the camera and experimenting with longer exposures again. Watching the camera capture the trails of light, colors, and patterns that happen in just a few seconds was part of the fun.

These are a few of my favorite shots from the evening, and the experience reminded me how much I enjoy the challenge of photographing fireworks.

Layers of the Blue Ridge

Standing atop Brasstown Bald, Georgia's highest peak at 4,784 feet, it's easy to lose count of the mountain ridges stretching toward the horizon. Each one fades a little more into the distance, creating the iconic blue layers that give the Blue Ridge Mountains their name.

That blue appearance isn't just a trick of the eye. Moisture in the atmosphere, combined with natural compounds released by the forests, scatters light and creates the soft blue haze that blankets the mountains.

While riding the shuttle to the summit, the park driver mentioned that on exceptionally clear autumn days, when the air is cool and humidity is low, you can even spot the Atlanta skyline, nearly 90 miles away. I wasn't there on one of those crystal-clear days, but the view was still incredible.

Even without seeing Atlanta, it's hard not to appreciate the vastness and beauty of the Southern Appalachians.
