It's incredible to watch how a horse responds to the hands of its handler, before he even says anything, the head drops, the whole body settles. I watched it happen with each horse we photographed. They know him. He's gentle and caring with each one. And they trust him. That's the part you can't stage. I just had to be close enough to catch it.

I didn't make to the next round in The People's Artist contest 2026. But I thank everyone for your support, and especially for those who contributed to The Art of Elysium on my behalf. Please continue to support other artists who are in this contest/fundraiser.

LIES WE TELL OURSELVES WHEN HIRING A PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER

Lie # 1: Getting all the digital files gives you freedom to print the photos on your own, however you want.

Truth: Receiving 100 or more digital images creates decision fatigue -- trust me, I've seen it too many times. So does prepping files for print. So does color correction. So does medium and framing choice. So does installing photos in your home. I don't choose for you, but, like a chef, I only serve you by showing you the very best images and help you create something gorgeous, meaningful, and lasting.

The truth is that your portraits deserve the time and investment I, as your boutique photographer, make in you through the whole process. I will be with you and offer guidance the whole time to curate something gorgeous, meaningful, and lasting.

So true. So true. 😕

Gus is young and still working out what he thinks about things. Jessica, clearly, has already worked out what she thinks about him. The portrait shows exactly whose terms this relationship is on.

To all the mothers and those who have been a mother-figure for others, thank you for all you do!

I know for many, including me, today is bittersweet. My mother died in 1998 at age 54. Some people have rough relationships with their mother, or maybe are a mother and have a difficult relationship with their children. Today can also be a bit of reminder for those, unable to have children, but wanted them. I also remember those who were mother figures to me, and I give thanks for you and the way that you have loved and shaped me.

In the midst of all the joy, grief, and regret I hope each of us can remember and be thankful for someone who was mother figure for us, offering love and compassion in our lives.

Blessings to all!

Before this session, Jessica and I spent time talking, strategizing, and planning. We talked about Gus, as well as location, daylight, and scheduling. I made a point to meet him well before we photographed him, because with animals, the session does not begin when the camera comes out. It begins the moment you walk onto their turf.

Even with all of that preparation, you adapt. You read how the animal is feeling in the moment, how your client is feeling, what the light is doing, and you adjust. The photographs that end up on a wall are the ones that came out of all that — the planning and the improvisation both.
