Can I tell you something?

If the thought of being in front of the camera makes you a little nervous… welcome to the club. Me too. 😂

You don’t have to be comfortable in front of the camera. You don’t have to know what to do with your hands, how to stand, where to look, or worry about any of the technical stuff.

I’ve got you. I’m going to guide you through it—because that’s exactly what I would want someone to do for me.

With headshots, my goal is to get to know you a little bit first. I want to figure out what it is about YOU that needs to shine for what you do—and then make that hit people in the face a little bit. 😂

I’ll pay attention to all those tiny details: the hair that needs a little zhuzh, the angle, your hands, your posture, the stuff you shouldn’t have to think about.

And then I’m going to try to draw out exactly what I love seeing in you so everyone else gets to see it, too.

I took these of Ashley at the end of August, and you know what I love about her?

She’s THAT girl. The one you’d want working beside you, coaching you, or teaching your kid. She makes people feel seen and valued, and she can also bring the honesty—with a side of humor that makes it all land really well.

You know those friends who can speak truth into your life, add real value AND still be so dang fun to be around?

Worth their weight in gold, right?!

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

This year, those words feel especially heavy.

This picture of sweet Joe was taken on September 14 last year.

On June 11, Joe left this world... and my heart aches for his mom and dad and everyone who loved him.

Because Joe was so much more than a diagnosis.

He was a whole, wonderful little boy. Deeply loved. Full of such a big personality and a wildly strong sense of humor. Chris and Clayton’s precious son.

Sometimes, in the middle of an ordinary moment with my own little boy, I find myself thinking about Joe—and about how deeply his family misses those ordinary moments with him.

The little conversations. The laughter. The everyday pieces of loving him that should never have felt extraordinary, but now are missed beyond words.

It is a heartbreak I cannot fully understand, but one I think about often.

I can remember Joe, speak his name, and allow his life—and the unimaginable loss his family is carrying—to remind me just how urgently we need to do better.

Children deserve treatments created specifically for their growing bodies. They deserve more research, more funding, better options, and more tomorrows with the people who love them.

Awareness has to mean listening to families. Speaking these children’s names. And refusing to accept that this is simply the best we can do.

I also want to offer you a tangible way to help.

Recently, I got to sneak up to Wisconsin for the Yesteryear Retreats — and YAY for lakes with no gators. 😂🙌🏻

I’m so thankful for the connections I got to make with some incredibly talented teachers Meg Loeks, Elizabeth Blank and Vanessa Rivera and such a lovely group of creatives. There’s something really special about getting away for a few days, being surrounded by people who love creating too, and getting to simply play, learn, and see things a little differently.

And Camp Wandawega was pretty much the perfect place for it. 🤍

A beautiful lake, vintage goodness tucked into every corner, and about a million little places that make you want to pick up your camera.

Sweet Clementine was one of our models, and somewhere along the way, I got to chatting with her mama and found out she’s a photographer too.

Which means she probably already has approximately eleven million beautiful pictures of her girl. 😂

But knowing that made me think a little differently while I was photographing Clementine. I found myself wanting to make something that her mama would love. Something that didn’t just show how beautiful Clementine is, but felt a little bit like childhood.

Her girl standing at the edge of a Wisconsin lake. Moonlight coming through the trees. Her reflection in the water. That little bit of magic that happens when you let a kid just exist in a beautiful place.

And I think that’s the part of photography I keep coming back to.

I love getting to play with light and reflections and try new things. I love all the vintage goodness at Camp Wandawega. I love making a photograph that’s beautiful.

But somewhere in the back of my mind, I’m almost always thinking about the mama who’s going to keep it.

What would make her heart catch a little when she sees her girl like this?

Because the pretty light is fun.

But who we’re making these photographs for is the part that matters to me most. 🤍

So thankful for this trip, the people I met, everything I learned, and sweet Clementine for letting us create with her.

And, once again, for Wisconsin lakes with NO GATORS. 😂

Guess what goes out tomorrow... 🎅✨

I’m SURE it’s why Dad is smiling. 😂

Also, it has been kind of wild to me how many of you have stopped me or sent me such kind words about the image I shared of my dad. Thank you! 🤍 It really was such a joy for me, too.

I don’t often get to dress up adults, boss them around a little 😂 and play with fun lighting scenarios. So getting to do that with my dad made it extra special.

ANYWAY... back to why he’s obviously smiling. 😉

August is birthday month for my dad, and you probably wouldn't believe me if I told you what year around the sun it is for him. 😉

I told him I needed his help with a project for class. I pulled out my checklist of lighting options from a Megan Arndt class I finished a few months ago, and together we played through all the lighting possibilities.

At one point, he told me about how they just didn't really have many photos when he was young. I've always had this feeling that being in front of the camera makes him feel a little special. Maybe there's something about having someone intentionally stop and say, "I want to capture you exactly as you are," that feels important.

He even contributed some ideas of his own—and at one point, he said the whole thing was fun.

If you know my dad, you know what a big deal that is. 😊 The kids don't call him Grumpy Grandpa for no reason.

One of the things I love about photography is the way it can peel back little layers of a person. Not necessarily to change what you know about them, or make everything simple, but to catch those quieter pieces that don't always get seen. A little more of the person underneath.

Eventually, I came clean. The class was already over. There was no project due. I just thought it would be fun to photograph him.

And honestly, that's part of why I wanted to do it. Life and relationships are complicated. People are layered. There are things we carry from the people who raised us, and things they carried long before we came along. Photography doesn't change any of that.

But every once in a while, it gives me a chance to pause, listen, and see someone from a slightly different angle.

And I'm really glad I got to do that with him.

A big shoutout to Lauren Ann for creating all of these beautiful keepsake canvases! 🤍 I mean… how cute are these?!

I love these sessions and these keepsakes because we all know the backpacks will eventually be covered in crumbs, someone will lose a water bottle before Friday, and at least one child will come home mysteriously missing a shoe. 😂

So we capture these sweet images **right before the chaos begins**—when the backpacks are still clean, the outfits are still intact, and the excitement is tangible. ✏️📚

Because someday, you’ll look back at these pictures and remember not just what they looked like, but how excited they were for what was ahead.

Cheers to capturing the memory. 😉

This image caught me a little.

How lucky are the kiddos who are encouraged to take steps that feel a little scary, knowing someone who loves them is right behind them—believing in them every step of the way.

I think that's where courage grows. And confidence, too. 🤍.

Every year, I let the kids pick the theme for their birthday photos. (This is Cole's bday week!)

Cole loved last year's idea so much, he requested an encore... sharing an ice cream cone with Winston. 🍦🐾

At first, Winston was still testing the waters, just quietly making sweet eye contact with his favorite little boy. (This is *that* moment.)

It was all sweet and adorable...
..until Winston got a little more comfortable.

Cole casually turned to me and said, "He licked my tongue."

He wasn't even remotely bothered.

I, however, am still trying to recover. 🤢😂
