Hey everyone! If you can make it, please come to Bennett Galleries on Kingston Pike in Knoxville TN on Saturday the 12th. It's a fund raising event for Owl Ridge Raptor Center, and a gallery display of amazing art and photography of birds of prey.
I have three photographs in the show, along with my wool needle-felted replica of one of their ambassador birds. Battlebeak Thunderclaw is a Great Horned Owl with a big personality!

When I was a little kid, I called these "potato chip butterflies". The proper name is a Cloudless Sulphur butterfly.

Early this morning, I visited the sunflower field in Maryville TN (where Nina Delozier Ln intersects with Sevierville Rd) and found that it's now in full bloom. The daughter of the property owner told me they expect them to last about 2 more weeks, and you are allowed to cut a handful to take home with you for free! Here's some samples of the pictures I took. I would have stayed longer in hopes of seeing birds and more butterflies, but it was already unbearably hot out in the field.

It's been way too hot today to spend time outside in the "feels like 104°" sunshine, so I sat inside my air conditioned house and opened the window to take pictures of the hummingbirds while they are still here. While watching out the window, I also noticed a red-eyed vireo stop by on its winter migration to the Amazon basin. I hope I get to see a lot more migrating birds over the next few weeks!

This morning a friend and I went to Dolly's statue in downtown Sevierville to place two buckets full of flowers at her memorial. I'm told that Random Acts of Flowers picks them up every couple of hours (due to heat and the huge volume of flowers being left) to repurpose them into bouquets to deliver to patients in hospitals, nursing homes, etc. They are labeling them to show that they were flowers given in honor of Dolly. What a wonderful gift to give and to receive!

After spending yesterday grieving the enormous loss felt across the entire planet with the passing of Dolly Parton, I decided to go butterfly watching today to lift my spirits.

This photo was taken on this exact date last year. It seemed fitting to honor Dolly today with this image. She was our most beautiful East Tennessee butterfly, and the flutter of her wings has been felt by the entire earth.

It was worth the two hour drive through the beautiful east Tennessee hills and valleys to attend the dedication of Tennessee's 67th State Park - Clinch River Valley State Park. It was clear from listening to the speakers that there were a WHOLE lot of folks working together to make this happen. Kudos to them.

Owl Ridge Raptor Center attended the ceremonies and treated the crowd to the thrill of watching a rehabilitated young hawk being released back into the wild in this beautiful location. She is a youngster, and seemed a bit unsure what to do after leaving the crate. After some contemplation, she flew up into the nearest tree and perched behind the leaves and branches to keep an eye on all the people milling about as the ceremony came to a close. Now she has a second chance to survive the brutality of nature and grow up to thrive!
