Halloween is just around the corner! Have you bought your $25 bag of chocolates that probably used to cost less than half of that just a couple of years ago?

I feel so lucky to be able to live in a neighborhood less than a half mile to shopping and under a mile to the interstate, and yet I still get to enjoy an amazing little oasis of nature up here along the ridge of a hill.
Today's "WOW" moment was when I looked out the window and saw this gorgeous barred owl staring back at me about 20 feet away. It kindly waited for me to slide open the window to take dozens of photos. It stayed quite a while, until the gang of Blue Jays finally irritated it enough to fly away into the woods.

I previously decided I wasn't going to create a bluebird calendar for 2027, but I've had so many people express disappointment and even a little bit of anger that this will "ruin our family Christmas tradition".

So, I created a 2027 calendar after all, and I think this might be my best edition over the past 10 years. I only had about half of the usual amount printed, so if you want one you might want to get yours soon before they sell out!

I'm happy that I've got 5 bluebirds visiting regularly now. I assume 2-3 of them are this year's fledglings who have finished their initial molt, and returned along with their mama and daddy.

A few days ago, Ranger Clare at Seven Islands State Birding Park told me their 'bird of the month' is the Ovenbird, and asked if I had any photographs she could use on their FB page. I was sorry to tell her I've never even seen one, much less get photographs.

Then, just a few days later, one appeared in the tree outside my window. I think Clare is a good luck charm!

I learned that they got their name because they build their nests on the ground, and the nest looks like a Dutch bread oven.

I think the last hummingbird coming to my flowers and feeders left yesterday morning to migrate south. He "waved bye-bye...

Today I went to the UT Gardens, and for the first time ever, I saw a tagged Monarch. I reported the tag number to Monarchwatch.org, and once they check their records, they will email me to tell me where and when she was originally tagged. It's likely one that UT Gardens raised and tagged, but I'm anxious to get the report to find out!

If you weren't there, you missed a wonderful afternoon at Bennett Galleries. There was a great turnout, and by the number of little red dots on the tags indicating a piece already sold, it was a big success.

All the great folks at Owl Ridge Raptor Center who came with their ambassador birds did a wonderful job showcasing these majestic birds. I saw the look of awe on so many faces!

The gallery show will be open all month, so you still have time to go check out the beautiful art of our native birds of prey. Donations to the raptor center are voluntary but very much needed and appreciated!

Hey everyone! If you can make it, please come to Bennett Galleries on Kingston Pike in Knoxville TN on Saturday the 12th. It's a fund raising event for Owl Ridge Raptor Center, and a gallery display of amazing art and photography of birds of prey.
I have three photographs in the show, along with my wool needle-felted replica of one of their ambassador birds. Battlebeak Thunderclaw is a Great Horned Owl with a big personality!
