Behavioral Euthanasia happens more than you think, so why don’t we talk about it?
As most of you know I have been offering end of life pet photography for some time now. I have had families come to me with pets who have been diagnosed with a terminal illness or just due to old age. However, the other reason I offer this service is for those who must decide to behaviorally euthanize their pet. This subject is often not talked about and is sometimes seen as shameful. So unfortunately, these families secretly endure grieving the loss of their pet out of fear of ridicule from others. It is a lonely road to navigate but it does not have to be like this.
Illnesses come in many capacities but they all can affect your life in some way.
Dog “A” with cancer – The owner leashes the dog up to go outside for a walk. They have done this same walk many times and typically walk 2 miles. However, recently they can only make it down the driveway and past the mailbox before they must turn home due to the dog’s physical limitations that have affected its ability to enjoy a walk outside with its owner.
Dog “B” with behavioral issues - The owner muzzles and leashes the dog up and heads out the door. They follow a strict training regime and even walk on a secluded trail. Unfortunately, they are surprised by an off-leash dog and this sends Dog “B” into an aggressive state. Now dog “B” is forced to end their walk and it was a negative experience which has affected its ability to enjoy a walk with its owner.
Two very different ailments they face but ultimately prove to have the same effect.
Whether you are euthanizing a dog due to a physical illness or euthanizing a dog for behavioral reasons. They are both made to humanely let a pet go without any more suffering. Both dogs are loved deeply by their families and so both families deserve to have photos taken of their beloved pets that showcase that bond.
If you are in a position where you have to make the decision to behaviorally euthanize your pet, please don’t let the fear of judgement hold you back from allowing me to help capture some positive memories for you to look on during your grieving process. Your reasons are valid, and you deserve good memories too!
