Some trials are about the dogs. Some trials are about the photographer surviving the conditions. 😅

The Northeastern Maryland Kennel Club AKC Scent Work Trial was one of those weekends.

Day 1 started with pouring rain, and I was fully prepared to drag out the waterproof gear and spend the day getting soaked. Thankfully, most of the searches were inside. The catch? They were the kind of buildings that make a photographer walk in and immediately think, *”Well, this should be interesting.”*

Instead of fighting it, I decided to lean into it and see what I could do. High ISO. Using my knee as a stabilizer. Hunting for the one spot in a room where the light actually worked. Bouncing light off whatever surfaces I could find. Making adjustments on the fly and trusting my instincts.

This was one of those events where there wasn’t a perfect setup. There wasn’t ideal lighting. There wasn’t a formula. It was just experience, problem-solving, and a camera.

Walking away from this trial, I wasn’t just proud of the photos. I was proud of the years of work behind them. The time spent learning, practicing, making mistakes, and figuring out how to create images no matter what conditions show up.

Sometimes you leave an event with great photos. Sometimes you leave reminded of just how far you’ve come. This trial gave me both. 📸🐾

Next stop: The Sniffing Hound NACSW Trial!

This will be my first NACSW trial, so naturally I’m showing up with cameras, extra memory cards, and only a mild fear of getting completely lost trying to follow all the search areas. 🤪

I’ll be there June 7 in Meadowbrook, PA, capturing all the searching, problem-solving, victories, celebrations, and maybe a few handler facial expressions that perfectly summarize scent work.

Looking forward to seeing everyone and experiencing my first NACSW trial from behind the camera!🤩

One of the ways dogs locate source odor is by using changes in scent concentration and how odor interacts with the environment around them.

Odor doesn’t travel in a straight line. As odor particles move through an area, they stick to surfaces differently depending on texture, temperature, moisture, and airflow. Rough surfaces, porous materials, vegetation, and fabric tend to hold odor longer, while smooth surfaces may allow odor to move more freely.

Dogs naturally work through these scent patterns, following areas where odor has collected, pooled, or settled before determining where the strongest concentration exists. What may look like a dog moving away from the hide is often the dog gathering information from odor that has adhered to surrounding surfaces.

This is one of the reasons scent work is so fascinating. Dogs aren’t simply following a trail, they’re interpreting a constantly changing picture of odor movement and concentration to locate the source.

A couple galleries had to briefly take a backseat for something a little special yesterday. My nephew only graduates 8th grade once, and making sure those memories were finished first was important to me.

That said, I know a lot of you are waiting very patiently for the Mason Dixon German Shorthaired Pointer Club trial photos. I’m actively working through them and still on track to have everything wrapped up by the end of the weekend.

I promise they’re coming. I’d rather take the extra time and deliver galleries worth the wait than rush through moments that deserve more than that.

Now back to editing dogs at full speed 😄

Candids.

I’m not usually one to brag on myself, but lately the feedback I’ve been getting about my photos has truly meant so much to me. Every compliment, every message, every “you captured my dog perfectly” does not go unnoticed. Thank you. Seriously.

I take a lot of pride in what I provide. Anyone can take a posed photo, but I’m always looking for the moments in between. The quick glance back at you, the excitement before a run, the focus, the chaos, the tiny expressions people don’t even realize happened. Those are the moments I love most.

I overshoot on purpose sometimes because I know that special moment is usually right around the corner. The split second after the “perfect pose” is often where the real magic happens.

This business is my pride and joy. My baby. I genuinely love what I do, but seeing all of you love the images just as much, if not more, honestly warms my heart more than you know.

I’m also a perfectionist to a fault and can be incredibly critical of myself. I’ll notice tiny details that make me cringe while everyone else is loving the image. So hearing the constant positive feedback lately has been really reassuring and motivating for me.

I don’t just want to give you photos. I want to give you moments you didn’t even realize someone caught. Seeing those candids become some of your favorite images has reminded me exactly why I do this. 🤍

“But you can barely see the dog.”

That’s the point. I love finding shots like this where the dog is just part of the scene instead of the entire scene.
