As Eve was getting ready to murder Christmas (put the decorations away), it dawned on me that I hadn't taken a single picture of Bowcehphus. We broke out the crystal ball and posed him up in the tree, upside-down so he would be right-side up in the ball (refraction) Happy New Year :)

Attemp #2 – I was traveling and showed my cool moon pic (previous post) to some folks, but noticed that it was much darker (phone, tablet) than when I saw it on my monitor. As such, I think the whole concept was lost (in previous post). I was attempting to capture both the light and dark sides of the moon by using HDR with an extreme spread. So, I went back to the drawing board and edited it again, to pull in more of the dark side. This did however bring out the noise.

After shooting the eclipse, this was a shot I always had in mind, so I took a stab at it tonight. What a pain in the ass. And, it’s not quite what I had hoped for. This was a 7-shot HDR with an 8-stop spread. The thing (moon) moves really fast (especially at 1,150mm), which blurred the last few shots (the longer exposures). So, I had to crank up the ISO to try and resolve the issue. Unfortunately this is where the 5Ds really falls on its face, so I ended up with a ton of noise in the dark exposures. Because of the movement (moon), from shot 1 to 7, there was a notable shift. I ended up having to align them by hand before loading them up to HDR. But, I had to do the same for the eclipse shots, so at least I was familiar with the task.

I’ll ponder what I’ve learned and try it again at some point :)
