I enjoy taking photos of the moon, but sometimes having something else in the frame makes the shot more interesting. On June 17, the planet Venus was close to the moon, so I wanted to capture them both. Getting the planet to be clearly visible requires a longer shutter speed to capture its lower light level. The added benefit of that is revealing the portion of the moon not illuminated by the sun but by reflected light from Earth, called earthshine. I was pleased that both goals were accomplished with a 1.3-second exposure, f9, ISO 500. The camera was a Canon 7D Mark II, mated to a Sigma 150-600mm zoom set at 283 mm. Editing was done using Photoshop Elements.
