It’s May 1st and I’m so ready for glory of spring. 🌸

When I was little my favorite place to play was in the trees.

I was often under the willow tree its long flowy branches gently brushing the ground below. I loved pretending it was my house. I would bring my doll and make pretty willow crowns for my hair.

There was also a guava tree that I loved to play with. I can still remember my favorite branch. It was half way to the top and it stretched far as if it wanted to see what was beyond its leaves. The branch was wide and smooth. It split near the end where I could sit and pretend it was something other than a tree. But often I would simply hug it and rest my face and let the smooth branch cool off my cheeks on hot Brazilian summer days. This was my favorite tree.

I don’t spend a lot of time outside, at least not as much time as I wish I could or think I should. When I was a kid I lived outside. I played with my dolls underneath my favorite weeping willow and played house on the branches of my favorite guava tree.

Childhood is but a single breath.

Portraits of your kids are wonderful to remember all the little curves and divots and freckles on their cute faces. But allowing them to be loud, wild and free during the family session is just as important. These are the moments that will one day help them remember what if felt like to be a kid.

Today here in MN it’s 48° and the sun is shining like it’s got nothing better to do. ☀️ I’m so ready for warm sunset photos and the sound of big in the tall grasses and birds singing happily in trees covered in green. Summer is definitely my favorite. Yeah, I know how beautiful fall is, blah blah blah, but during the summer I never feel cold. Oh, except for EVERYWHERE indoors. Are Minnesotans obsessed with feeling cold?

I shot this 4 days ago. The sun had already set but the afterglow on the snow is so beautiful. I love how mysterious is looks. Geneviève at first was super grumpy about my idealistic notion of pictures of her in said afterglow but she got into it eventually. “Mom, you love it when I look at the grasses, right [lol]?Take one of me jumping toward the tree!” She’s always such a good sport. 😍 For those of you interested in seeing how to make a double exposure in camera, take a peek at my stories for step by step. Here’s the thing about in home lifestyle shoots, no matter what happens, it’s going to be great. I understand how we all want that perfect picture of our perfect kids, our perfect home and our perfect life together. But let’s be real, life with young children is pretty chaotic. And that’s ok.

I get it.

I love it.

All of it.

And I love photographing it.

The chaos doesn’t bother me. If your kids throw a fit, I promise I won’t judge you in the least. If your kids tell me to go away, I won’t get offended. In fact, I might have to look away so I can laugh at it. If your kid is upset, let me capture that face. If your kids want to do silly faces, let them. You’ll want t remember it. In a few years those are the pictures that will make you feel something.

She’s always looking for the next risk to take. This is one of them. She worked and saved up her money for it but it stresses me out most of the time. I try not to hover too much so I don’t get labeled a “helicopter parent”. Sometimes I just look away so I don’t keep telling her to be careful. Every. 13. Seconds. But other times, I watch her from my window like this. (When she realized it she said I looked creepy. Lol.) Oh well. I guess I’m kinda helicopter-y. 💁🏻‍♀️
