Everyone photographs the first day of school. Almost nobody photographs the ordinary Tuesday.
I understand why. The first day is a milestone, there's an outfit, they're standing by the door with a sign. It's a good picture and you should absolutely take it.
But the photographs I end up loving most, in my own family and in other people's, are the ones from a completely unremarkable afternoon. Nothing was happening. Nobody had planned anything. Somebody was reading on the floor with their legs up the wall in a way that only makes sense at eight.
That is the version of them you will forget first. Not the milestones β those are documented within an inch of their lives. The ordinary Tuesday is the thing that quietly disappears.
So: take the first-day picture. Then next week, on a nothing day, take one more.
Happy long weekend. π
