Good silverwork asks for patience.

For David Alderson, that patience has been built over more than four decades at the bench. His career has taken him through engraving, silversmithing, jewelry repair, stone setting, goldsmithing, and years of continued study with accomplished craftsmen.

That depth of experience shows in the details. Every cut, line, and finish reflects the steady hand of someone who has spent a lifetime learning how to make the work better.

Dave’s pieces are a reminder that traditional Western craftsmanship is not rushed. It is built slowly, carefully, and with respect for the craft itself.

A little reminder about intellectual property — because good work deserves good protection.

Whether you’re a painter, photographer, leatherworker, jeweler, maker, designer, writer, or any other kind of creative: your work is yours.

Intellectual property protection helps artists maintain control over how their original work is copied, reproduced, displayed, altered, or used commercially.

And here’s the important part: seeing an image online doesn’t automatically mean it’s free to use. When you want to use someone else’s creative work, ask about licensing. When someone wants to use yours, make sure you understand what rights you’re granting.

A simple licensing agreement can protect both sides and make expectations clear from the beginning.

At The Cowboy Emporium, we believe in supporting artists and makers with the same things we value in the West: integrity, respect, and doing business the right way.

Western craftsmanship is built on more than skill. It is built on generations of knowledge being passed from one maker to the next.

David Alderson’s career reflects that tradition. Early in his journey, he worked with respected silversmiths and engravers in California, including time with Fritch Brothers Silversmiths, whose own history connected back to legendary Western silversmith Ed Bohlin. Over the years, Dave continued sharpening his engraving, silverwork, jewelry, and goldsmithing skills while developing a style of his own.

That history matters. It is part of what gives handmade Western work its depth — the understanding that every piece carries not only the hand of the maker, but the influence of the craftsmen who came before.

We are proud to feature Dave’s work at The Cowboy Emporium and to share that tradition with our community.

There are craftsmen who learn a trade, and there are craftsmen who spend a lifetime refining it.

David Alderson has been engraving and working in silver for more than four decades. His path began in the late 1970s and grew through years of hands-on experience with respected silversmiths, jewelers, and engravers. Along the way, he continued building his skills in silver work, engraving, stone setting, and goldsmithing.

Dave’s work is a reflection of that lifetime of experience. It is detailed, deliberate, and rooted in the traditions of the West.

We’re proud to feature his work here at The Cowboy Emporium and to introduce our community to another maker helping carry Western craftsmanship forward.

For more than four decades, David Alderson has devoted himself to the art of engraving and silversmithing.

His journey began in the late 1970s in California, where he first encountered engraving in his uncle’s saddle shop. From there, he spent years learning the finer points of silver work, engraving, jewelry making, and traditional Western craftsmanship from respected makers and engravers.

That dedication eventually led to his acceptance into the Traditional Cowboy Arts Association in 2001—an organization committed to preserving the traditional crafts that are such an important part of cowboy culture.

What stands out about Dave’s work is the depth behind it. Every piece reflects years of practice, a respect for tradition, and the hand of a craftsman who has never stopped learning.

We’re proud to welcome David Alderson as one of the silversmiths featured at The Cowboy Emporium.

After an incredible Cheyenne Frontier Days, The Cowboy Emporium is taking a few days to rest, recharge, and spend time with family.

We are currently closed and will reopen Monday, August 3.

Thank you to everyone who stopped in during CFD and supported the artists, makers, and craftsmen whose work fills our gallery. We look forward to welcoming you back to explore remarkable Western art, functional pieces, and quality craftsmanship made to be lived with.

What an incredible Cheyenne Frontier Days.

To every artist, maker, customer, friend, and visitor who walked through our doors, thank you. Your support, conversations, and appreciation for Western art and craftsmanship made this CFD one we will always remember.

The Cowboy Emporium will be closed beginning today, July 27, and will reopen Monday, August 3. We are taking a few much-needed days to rest and spend time with our daughter and grandson before they leave for Italy.
