High Voltage Concert Photography

High Voltage Concert Photography Derek C. Smith
Freelance Concert Photography I never set out to become a concert photographer. I’m an attorney by profession. A photographer by passion. It’s not.

For years, I directed that passion towards capturing the beauty, elegance and artistry of sculptures and architecture, particularly the shapes, lines, shadows and materials that imbue each one with personality and life. My passion for photographing these art forms continues today. But then there is music… I still remember the first album I ever listened to (AC/DC’s Back in Black), the first album

I ever owned (The Who’s It’s Hard) and the first concert I ever attended (The Monkees). Those memories never fade because the music never dies. It lives inside me, forming the internal soundtrack that has not only shaped my life, but has transported me countless times back to that young boy growing up in Ohio. I’m older now, but music is as important as ever. It still moves me. And there is no better place to experience the power of music than at a live show. For a few hours, it can emotionally and spiritually transport you to another place. A place with no deadlines, no stress, no troubles, no worries. It is this power that music has over us that propelled me into concert photography. I love capturing those moments when the concert becomes more than merely a show – it becomes an experience. Unfortunately, few, if any, media outlets cover it anymore. They apparently think rock is dead. It’s very much alive. My goal is to help keep it so by capturing those transcendent moments of the live musical experience that shape our lives – and share them with you. Long live rock. I need it every night.
