A white lighthouse rises from a rocky promontory under a clear blue sky. The lantern room sits above weathered stone and low white cottages, with a simple fence tracing the cliff edge while cool teal water laps at jagged rocks. Light falls cleanly across the masonry, which gives the scene a practical calm instead of spectacle. Gloria Steinem, a leader of the women’s movement, has passed away at the age of 92. She was the co-founder of Ms. Magazine. She spoke out for the cause of women’s rights and was an activist until the very end.

If I recall correctly, she spoke at FCB Advertising in Chicago when I was employed there. The agency, under its president David Ofner, would bring in presenters to educate and inspire the employees.

She also came to the ERA March in Chicago in 1980 as a keynote speaker along with Betty Friedan, Bella Absug and Jean Stapleton. I still have a photo that I made at that time of Jean Stapleton (All in the Family),Marlo Thomas and Norman Lear.

I made this image of the Sacré Coeur when I was on my way to the airport in Paris. The taxi driver asked if there was anything I had missed and kindly drove me up to Montmartre so I could see the basilica up close. White domes rise above a patchwork of weathered rooftops, the rounded forms and clean lines giving the view a calm, confident presence. A landmark that reads both grand and approachable. On my way to the airport a taxi driver asked if there was anything in Paris I had wanted to see and missed, so I said Sacré Coeur and he drove me up the hill to this view. The Sacré Coeur Basilica stands high on a hill in Montmartre, the neighborhood where artists gathered in Paris. In this image the basilica rises above a dense quilt of rooftops, its domes and arches combining a sense of civic presence with everyday detail. The world is mourning the loss of Dolly Parton today. The photographic world also lost one of the great ones - Jay Maisel - this past week. Jay was a consummate photographer who incorporated color, light and gesture in his images and taught his students to do the same. He won all kinds of prestigious accolades including the Life Achievement Award from the American Society of Media Photographers and the Infinity Award from the International Center of Photography.

I met Jay at the Maine Photographic Workshop in the 1980’s. His work so resonated with me that I took a weeklong workshop with him at the Anderson Ranch in Colorado. Early in his career, he had painted and studied color theory with Josef Albers. I remember the example that he showed us how an identical blue square appears differently depending on its surrounding color.

Jay always carried a camera with him and advised his students to do the same. He not only shared how to look at the world with his students, but also how to run a business. Although at times he sounded gruff. He had a great sense of humor and had a knack of eliciting laughter with his stories and his barbs.

I invited Jay to be the keynote speaker at the hundredth anniversary of Fort Dearborn-Chicago Photo Forum in 1995. We were honored to have him for this special historic occasion.

Dolly Parton lifted up the world with her songs. Jay Maisel showed us the beauty of the world through his photos. He will be missed. His pictures and his influence on generations of photographers will be his legacy.
