Chicago Son, Westside Raised

Gary smiles all the time. Even as a kid, he was always wearing that smile.

So, as we were trying to capture this particular shot, his wife, Anne, had to remind him that we were going for a serious expression.

Finally, Gary’s expression changed—and this is the moment we captured.

When I asked him what brought on the seriousness, he said he was thinking about the tragic events happening in Mississippi.

That was more than enough to put Gary in a serious mood.

Sometimes, a photograph captures more than a face. It captures a moment, a memory, and everything that was on someone’s mind when the shutter clicked.

Happy 17th Birthday Laila,

Wow Seventeen? Seriously? I could’ve sworn you were about 10 last week! Somebody has been speeding up the calendar, because there’s no way my little granddaughter is almost an adult.

You’ll always be my “Lil Laila,” no matter how grown you think you are. You will soon get your driver’s license, make your own plans, and tell everybody you’re “almost grown!”

Enjoy being 17. You’ve got one more year before everybody starts saying, “Welcome to adulthood!” Trust me, there’s nothing magical about paying bills, so don’t rush it!
