The book I've been working on for over a decade is finally finished!
I went out 1,200 times over 25 years, into dark alleys and abandoned ruins in the middle of the night with a 50 year old camera. What made me keep going back, despite the danger and all the close calls?
When you read this book, you will learn things about me I had planned to take to my grave.
Alleys & Ruins is 25 years of work distilled into 300 pages.
Part memoir, part fine art, part adventure story.
"You will never see a dark alley the same way again" - PBS
"A redemption story that's more honest and vulnerable than any I've read before." - Bryan Nyary, PhD
The digital book is available now for $10 - the fully designed book, all 247 photographs, all the stories, the complete memoir.
The limited edition print book arrives September 2026.

DOUBLE THE TUNNELS!
That’s right… not one, but TWO tunnel shots from my Alleys & Ruins series. Which one pulls you in? The rusted stop sign chaos of Dub Stop or the neon geometry of Tunnel? Cast your vote, because apparently I can’t pick a favorite.

This is my image “Sunday Morning” shot in 1984 when I was 19. It was a total fluke because I didn’t know much at the time. I was playing with glazes and accidentally created something I should have thrown away. Instead I grabbed my camera and took this photograph. Fifteen years later I came across the picture again and only then did I see how much further I could explore what I’d started. Today it’s my successful Crystal series, close pictures of dinner plates that I re-glaze and repaint.

Can’t believe this was almost 20 years ago.

It’s a warm summer night in Chicago. I’ve framed "Alley no. 90, Window" and released the shutter for a 30-minute exposure. My friend Phil and I are passing the time when Horace appears, an odd figure in a suit jacket with the sleeves torn off and no shirt underneath. His face, chest, and neck are crisscrossed with dozens of fine scars, apparently inflicted years ago.

He tells us he’s just out of prison, where he met a superhuman being who taught him to connect with his mind and unlock powers. Horace insists he has them too. Recently, he says, he used those abilities to backflip 20 feet onto a rooftop to escape a group of pursuers.

I ask if he can show us something now. He shakes his head.

“I can’t demonstrate to you my powers - they only work when I’m in danger or when they are truly necessary”
