Years and years of dreaming about going to Iceland but never had a reason or the time to go. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen photos of Iceland and said I need to get there. Then the pandemic hit and Iceland became one of those places I was going to make happen after and when I could. Flying over to London for a wedding was gonna take me right by there so I booked a few days there. Weather wasn’t gonna be ideal but I didn’t care. I needed boots on the ground and to scout a bit and to be better prepared for a longer visit in the future. If I could get a few shots I was happy with on this trip even better.

The landscape is unlike anything else. It’s similar to New Zealand but grander, greener and colder. There is so many badass sights and so much to see I’m not sure you could see it all and do it proper justice in 6 months.

With unmatched mountain scapes and waterfall it’s pretty easy to see why it’s a photographers paradise. The thing that made me want to come see and shoot Iceland though were the glacial rivers that flow out to the ocean. The colors and textures are like something out a Van Goh or Monet painting. Ever changing from the flow from the glaciers in both colors and shape. From a fine art perspective I’m not sure there is a better subject. To get here and have two and a half days of rain out of the three days I had needless to say I was quite disappointed. The last afternoon the rain broke and I was finally going to get a chance to fly the drone and get a feel for some of the glacial rivers. Again just scouting and getting a feel for it so when I come back again I can do it right. Couldn’t fly far enough to get exactly where I wanted to but I got enough of a feel for it.

Can’t wait to come back and do it right.

Update - Sunny days ahead. After a battle with insurance I got approved to go see one of the best wrist and elbow surgeons in the country at the Steadman Clinic where countless of professional athletes go and also happens to the where my sister in law works. A new set of X-rays and a physical exam later they said the elbow isn’t fractured most likely a bone bruise but there is some prior damage also with floating bodies in my elbow that could have contributed to the swelling and the pain the other day which also makes way more sense as to why it didn’t hurt right after the fall.

I’m already having less pain and gaining range of motion back and with some ice, Tylenol, and anti inflammatory I should be alright sooner than later. I will need to get the elbow scoped at some point to clean up the prior injury/ies that I can’t seem to remember. Missed out on a fun work trip for sail fish and marlin in Guatemala but good news is that’s all I’ll miss. Counting my blessings and thanks to everyone who wished for a speedy recovery seems like it’ll be much speedier than I anticipated. Pays to get a second opinion especially by some of the best.

Not all rainy days need to be dark and dreary. Shot in Kenya on a rainy afternoon.

Trying to see some of that same light today. Fractured my right elbow yesterday as well as being knocked out cold while mtn biking and literally at the end of the ride. Thankful for my sister in law who not only kicks my ass on the bike but knows what do in a situation like that. Tried to catch myself and well that didn’t work and all that energy had to go somewhere and as the doc said it’s either the wrist or the the elbow. Still need to see an orthopedic surgeon to see if I need surgery or not. Fortunate it was just an elbow and no head or neck injuries. Pretty unfortunate ending to what was otherwise a pretty great weekend. Bummed because I was finally about to get back to work with 4 shoots in the next 3 weeks including leaving for Guatemala tomorrow. Looks like 2021 is gonna have a little adversity as well. Here’s to a speedy recovery and being able to hold a camera again soon.

It’s hot as balls in Cali right now gonna need to either find some elevation or make a mad dash for the coast. Big Sur wasn’t a spot on the list for this trip but it might have to be added.
