"Hot Lips" ("When He Plays Jazz He's Got - Hot Lips"). First big hit written by trumpeter Henry Busse and originally performed and recorded by Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra on June 23, 1922 in New York.

It was advertised as "A Blues Fox Trot Song".
The song is about a trumpet player. The chorus is:

He's got hot lips— When he plays Jazz
He draws out step,— Like no one has
You're on your toes,— And shake your shoes
Boy, how he goes— When he plays Blues
I watch the crowd— Until he's through
He can be proud— They're "cuckoo,' too
His music's rare You must declare,— The boy is there
With two hot lips, He's got hot lips

The pieces of flexible cardboard, covered in a thin layer of the lacquer with grooved pressed into it (on one side only), were usually attached to the magazines, In the late 1920s. Playing it on the crank-up phonograph, with the vertical tracking force in the range of the ounces, was lethal to it. This one, somehow, survived. And it sounds surprisingly good!!

Thursday, August 29th. The first day of the Chicago Jazz Festival started on Dinah's 100th birthday. Was she a Jazz Singer? No more, or less than a blues, gospel, folk or pop singer. She was THE singer. In a brief and intense period of 20 years, she accomplished more than all other singers combined in a century. She was imitated by thousands of others. Nonetheless, there is only one Dinah Washington. I don't think there is a day that passes without me playing at least one of her records.
