Horizons Untamed
Imagine a fresh pot of coffee brewing in the back of the truck while you’re standing somewhere you’ve never been before.
That was my morning.
I arrived while it was still dark. The kind of darkness you only seem to find far away from towns and streetlights, where the headlights illuminate an empty dirt road and everything beyond them simply disappears.
It was cold enough that I could see my breath when I stepped outside.
The ground was damp from a light rain overnight, and the air carried that unmistakable smell of wet pine, sage, and mountain earth. Somewhere nearby, water moved quietly over rocks, but in the darkness I couldn’t quite see where it was coming from.
So I made coffee.
Nothing fancy. Just a fresh pot, a warm cup between my hands, and a few quiet minutes waiting for morning to arrive.
Then the horizon began to change.
First came a faint blue behind the mountains. Then a little violet. And finally, just enough light to reveal the fog lying quietly across the valley below me.
That’s when I grabbed the camera.
We walked a little farther down the trail, tripods over our shoulders, boots wet from the grass. Nobody said much. There are mornings when conversation almost seems out of place.
And then we found it.
The place we’d been looking for.
A small opening between the pines where the entire valley suddenly appeared before us.
Fog drifted slowly between the trees. The mountains disappeared into the clouds and then emerged again. Somewhere across the valley, an elk called from the timber.
And for a moment, we forgot about the cameras.
We just stood there.
You could smell the rain still hanging in the air. Feel the cold settling into your hands. Hear the water below us and the wind moving gently through the pines.
Then the clouds opened.
Not completely.
Just enough.
A shaft of morning light broke through and traveled across the valley until it touched the side of the mountain.
That’s the photograph.
The one we had gotten out of bed in the darkness hoping to find.
I looked over at you and smiled.
“You ready?”
Because this is what I want Horizons Untamed to become.
I don’t simply want to show you photographs of beautiful places.
I want to take you there.
I want you standing beside me before sunrise with a camera in your hands and coffee waiting back at the truck.
I want to teach you how to watch the weather, read the light, slow down and really see what’s happening around you.
And when that moment finally appears—the fog, the mountains, the wildlife, that impossible light—I want you to know how to capture not only what you saw…
but what it felt like to be there.
Because long after we’ve packed the cameras away and started down that old dirt road toward home, I want you to remember that morning.
The cold.
The smell of the pines.
The coffee.
The silence.
The light breaking through the clouds.
And perhaps most of all, the overwhelming realization that for a few quiet hours, we were standing in the middle of something we could never create ourselves.
We were simply there to witness it.
God already created the masterpiece.
Our privilege was learning how to see it.
