My thoughts about choosing a wedding photographer:

When booking a photographer for any reason, but especially for milestone events you can’t re-shoot, it is important to choose on whose style and approach to photography is aligned. I am going to say a few notes about my thoughts on wedding photography as well. For example, if you are looking for a vintage or film inspired photographer or a dark and moody photographer, you should not be booking a true to color or light and airy photographer. If you want editorial style photography, don’t book a documentary style photographer.

I am always thinking about what I would want as a client when approaching all of my sessions. I love working with couples who are laid back and want to enjoy their days because that is how I would be as a client. I tell everyone I don’t want it to feel like a giant photoshoot. My approach is a mix of posed images worked into a timeline that prioritizes couple’s photographic desires while also allowing them to actually socialize and take a breath. I don’t love to box myself into categories, but would describe myself as pretty true to color and documentary style with posed moments intermixed.

My goal with wedding photography is to capture the day as it is and create some classic portraits and moments that can be framed and viewed for years to come. While I appreciate and enjoy seeing more artistic or creative shots intended for social media or the next viral moment, personally I don’t intent to photograph that way and don’t believe weddings are the time for it. If the schedule allows for it or if the couple has some unique poses they want to try or inspiration strikes, then I’m all for being creative and experimenting. But good news: there’s plenty of photographers whose styles are more aligned with that vision!

I am always up front when couples reach out to me that I don’t think is a great fit. I want it to be a great fit on both ends and there are so many talented photographers for every style imaginable, that I am happy to pass on opportunities that don’t serve us both on such an important day. I don’t mean to dissuade anyone from inquiring, but I hope that being honest about expectations leads to my niche of clients with a similar vision that I provide.

Here’s the rest of my favorites from Carli and Kennedy’s session with their horses Nico and Zar! I loved fulfilling their western themed session with the gorgeous weather and lighting that day. I love my returning clients and catching up with what they’ve been up to and how they’ve changed over the years. Nico was very relaxed and happy to model and it was great to meet their new(er) horse Zar.

It’s not too late to take advantage of the rest of summer for golden hour portrait sessions and any equine fine art sessions!
