On this day May 25th, four years ago in 2020 George Floyd was murdered by white police officer Derek Chauvin while other officers stood and watched. Officer Chauvin arrested Floyd for alleged passing counterfeit money. During the arrest, Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck and back for more than nine minutes which caused Floyd to asphyxiate to death while other officers hold his legs and body down and another held back the crowd and the paramedics on the scene.

Officer Chauvin was subsequently found guilty of murder and is now serving a 22 and half years prison sentence. The other officers were also found guilty of various charges including aiding and abating second degree manslaughter and were also sentenced to prison.

The George Floyd murder sparked world wide protests and calls for Black Lives Matter across the United Sates and the world against police use of excessive force and violence against the civilians whom they are responsible to serve and protect. The event further brought to light the disparity entreatment of African Americans in various institutions in the United States.

It Is still unclear whether the Floyd’s murder lead to any significant change in police attitude towards the discharge of their duty or lead to any positive action in dealing with the disparity in treatment based on race. Given the latest police brutality against the protest in various campuses it appears that police brutality and use of excessive force is and will continue to grab headlines.
