Just returned from the Summit
(North American Nature Photography Association).
I cannot adequately express the wealth of talent, experience and vision of the members of this organization, and of their willingness and passion to share what they love. Through the years NANPA has been there to enlighten, to educate, inspire and connect with like minded photographers in this special community. Thank you NANPA!!! And thank you to the NANPA Summit Committee!

The summit is held every two years, but there are many other opportunities to connect through this forum. Check them out at www.nanpa.org, or connect through Facebook or Instagram.

This years lineup of speakers were incredible! They all shared powerful and enlightening images, movies and messages from all aspects of nature photography, from around the world. Every one of them challenged us to pursue our love of the natural world through photography, and to find meaningful ways to share it with others.

We often say a picture is worth a thousand words, today we hope a picture is worth a thousand acres of land saved... or a thousand species saved... or many hundreds of thousands inspired by our images to get turn off the electronics and get outdoors to reconnect with nature - only then will people understand what is at risk when we ignore the impact we are having on this planet...and to care enough to both celebrate the beauty of the world around us, and care enough to take steps stop the destruction in time to make a difference for our children and our children’s children.

We live in busy times. Finding that balance between work, home, family often finds me waiting until the end of the year to begin processing images from our travels. But on those magical fall days even an iPhone finds its place.

Such beautiful colors and patterns and light are begging us all to take a moment, disconnect from the electronics and celebrate these perfect magical moments in nature. Enjoy!

From snow to a couple of warm days. Today’s sudden 85 degree day brought instant summer and our first hummingbird of the season! Shot through a window in my haste to catch it. Hopefully it’s the beginning of spring/summer on this May Day and many more sightings!

Cooper's Hawk fine dining. Still trying to positively identify what bird this raptor consumed, feet and all! It's always impressive when I find some great wildlife subjects as close as home. Nikon d5, 600mm, f5.6. (unedited screen capture from my phone)

While this may not be the best leopard photo I've ever shot, it will go down as the most challenging. Taken at night amid many many safari jeeps, dust swirling, all of us competing for a view of this leopard. I had to stand on the seat cushion, long exposure, hand held without any support devices, I tucked in my elbows against my ribs, held my breath and hoped to stay balanced and still during the long exposure, illuminated by safari Jeep headlights. I consider it just short of a miracle I captured anything usable under those conditions. Taken outside of Satpura National Park, Forsythe Lodge, Madhya Pradesh, India as the leopard took a brief break after drinking in the pond below.

Slowly working my way through India images. While the objective was seeing Tigers and other animals in the wild I was really happy to have also spent time with the people of India, like this gentleman, who really wanted his photo taken on his motorcycle in a border zone outside of Pench National Park on Madhya Pradesh, India. The orange scarf was worn as part of a religious celebration that we saw many times throughout the region. This same road was used by villagers, farmers with their cattle, school children and those on safari in the national parks.

For those who may have wondered why I've been quiet recently I can only say the road called and I was helpless to resist. We've been on safari in India. It has been an incredible journey through Delhi, Agra and the Taj Mahal, Khajuraho, and many National Parks. Bear with me, most of these are iPhone photos taken from the back of my Nikon. I will have a ton of editing to do!

We have seen 15 individual tigers, sloth bears (very elusive!), leopard, Indian Wild Dog, monitor lizards, Gaur (bison), and more birds than I can list here. Some of our most favorite times were spent touring small villages and spending time with the villagers and children. We made many new friends along the way. All in all - a great experience!

Many thanks to Todd Gustafson, Gustafson Photo Safaris, Holbrook Travel, Harry - Harendra Singh, and the great guides and naturalists who worked with us on this adventure, none of it would have been possible without you! Thank you!

If you happen to visit Burpee Museum of Natural History of Rockford IL please stop to see a special exhibit commemorating Rockford's 75th Anniversary. Many of my images from Africa were used to accompany their taxidermy exhibit signage and a slideshow. Contact Burpee Museum for their daily operating hours and exhibit information.

Sorry for the long hiatus in posting images.

Our travel schedule kept us on the move in August, September and October to some excellent photographic locations: Botswana Africa, Hawaii and the flowing volcanos of Kilauea, and Utah's National Parks. All uniquely different, all spectacular.

And then we began a process of beefing up our data storage to manage our ever growing catalog - a process that became much bigger and more invasive than ever imagined. After months of moving files and increasing capacity we ran into a mechanical issue that will now require replacing the main storage chassis. Who would have thought 3 year old devices would be considered old?!

Incredibly frustrating watching images flicker by, and being unable to work on them while data was being transferred. Hoping for a resolution with new equipment in the next few weeks. Until then I'll hold you over with a few cell phone images.
