What makes an engagement portrait feel like art rather than just a pretty photo?
For me, the difference comes down to intention: how the light, architecture, composition, movement, and emotion work together.
Nora and Austinβs Art Institute of Chicago engagement session gave us plenty of room to explore that balance. We used negative space, clean lines, gallery walls, quiet moments, and candid movement to create images that feel polished without looking overly posed.
Their personalities shaped the session, too. We spent extra time in the Arms & Armor galleries because Austin loves that period of history, and a few silly photos helped them settle in and enjoy the experience.
The full session is now on the blog, along with practical tips for planning editorial engagement photos at the Art Instituteβincluding what to wear, when to schedule your session, and how to move naturally through a public museum.
