If you've been following my page for a while, you know that I'm a huuuge animal lover 🥰 So when my couples ask to include their pup in an engagement session, I am thrilled! And the fact that it's been happening at almost every session I do lately means I think I'm attracting the right couples, like L+C and their adorable ball of fluff last week 😍 We started solo at one of my favorite spots, the Wrigley Building, then headed over to Lincoln Park with the pup- a perfect engagement session 💖

What makes an engagement portrait feel like art rather than just a pretty photo?

For me, the difference comes down to intention: how the light, architecture, composition, movement, and emotion work together.

Nora and Austin’s Art Institute of Chicago engagement session gave us plenty of room to explore that balance. We used negative space, clean lines, gallery walls, quiet moments, and candid movement to create images that feel polished without looking overly posed.

Their personalities shaped the session, too. We spent extra time in the Arms & Armor galleries because Austin loves that period of history, and a few silly photos helped them settle in and enjoy the experience.

The full session is now on the blog, along with practical tips for planning editorial engagement photos at the Art Institute—including what to wear, when to schedule your session, and how to move naturally through a public museum.
