Want to take better photos with your phone? Your camera setup matters more than you might think.

Camera distance, lens choice, lighting and angle can all change the way you look in a photo. Sometimes the thing you don’t like isn’t you at all. It’s how the camera is seeing you.

As a photographer and educator, I teach people how to understand these little things so they can take better photos of themselves, their business and their everyday life.

No fancy camera required. Just a better understanding of the one you already have in your hand.

Try this if you always notice a double chin in photos.
Put your hand under your chin and practice gently pushing your chin forward and slightly down. It helps you feel the movement instead of guessing what you’re supposed to do.
Once you get it, take your hand away and try it in your next photo.
Such a small posing adjustment, but it can make a BIG difference.
Save this one and practice before your next picture.

Here are a few of mine from my summer vacation.

I adore Brooke and Chase (old Chase 🤣) from Ed & Ethel’s Fine Jewelry and want to shout out their social media efforts. Now ask yourself…why is it working so well? Are they showing us more jewelry? No.
They are showing us them! I know social media is so hard to grasp for yourself sometimes. But gone are the days of stuffy sales-y posts. Mix in a bit of personality. If you’re stressed out by it or curious…stayed tuned and follow along. The fall workshops will be announced soon.

Steppin’ Out got me thinking about personal branding this weekend. And if you are a small business, you NEED to hear this.

I found myself going out of my way to visit booths of people I already knew. I bought from them. I stopped to say hi.

But I also stopped at booths because I recognized someone from social media. I’d been seeing their work or their face pop up in my feed, and suddenly there they were in real life.

THAT IS PERSONAL BRANDING!!!

Think about how many vendors were there selling jewelry, art, pottery, food, soap, or something similar two booths down. And keep in mind the average person doesn’t know why your product may be better.

So why do you stop at one?

Sometimes it’s the product, obviously. Sometimes it’s the display.

But sometimes you already feel like you know the person behind it.

You’ve seen their work. You’ve heard them talk about their business. You know a little about their story. Maybe you’ve never actually met them, but there’s already some familiarity there.

And when you finally see them in person, you’re not walking up to a stranger’s booth.

You need to recognize that as a small business because when you do that…they aren’t your competitors.

So I’m curious. If you went to Steppin’ Out this weekend, was there someone you specifically went looking for?

Or did you stop at a booth because you recognized the business or person from social media?

What actually made you stop?

It’s so fun working with Marissa at Cheers New River Valley!

It’s been a whirlwind of a month 💫

Between traveling for work, dog-sitting, moving, and trying to live a little more in the moment, it hasn’t been a slow summer but I’m so grateful for the ability to still stay connected through Blacksburg Living - Best Version Media and Christiansburg Neighbors - Best Version Media magazines.

I’m humbled to be featured on the July cover, which you can still read before the August issue comes out 📖

In case you didn’t know, I LOVE writing the events for both magazines each month. It’s a joy to help locals remain informed with events and must-visit activities in the New River Valley 🤝

A special thank you to the team at Best Version Media for the feature. You could have chosen anyone but you shared our story, which means the world 🌎✨

Enjoy and cheers! 🥂

I drag my daughter to shoots to hold lights, do behind the scenes, and make her model. Haha! She’s turning into a little marketing machine.

While we are on the subject of Noah Kahan (I’m probably never going to shut up about how amazing the show was) I wanted to show my Sad Bug Summer tee in honor of The Great Divide🤭

So many of you have already snagged one, and it makes me SO happy! You can shop these at the market this Saturday from 8am-2pm!🐞🐜🪲🪱

One of the things I love most about photography is that there’s always more to learn.

I recently spent time at in a week long workshop called Movie Magic: Lighting and Storytelling Inspired by Film with . And it completely pulled me back into thinking about light in a different way.

Not just “good lighting.” But intentional lighting.

Lighting that creates mood, tells a story, and makes you feel something before a single word is spoken.

These images are from some of the sets we created during the week, and I loved seeing how much emotion and atmosphere could come from small shifts in light, color, and direction.

This workshop really changed the way I think about lighting, and I’m so excited to put it into practice.
