On this day, June the 8th, 54 years ago (1972) photographer Nik Ut was covering the ongoing conflict in Vietnam when he took a photo of children fleeing the village of Trang Bang – which had just been mistakenly napalmed by the South Vietnamese Air Force.

The published image - which was to become known by the title 'The terror of war' - has been called one of the most iconic and important images of the 20th Century.

After taking his images Ut and fellow photographers administered first aid to 9-year-old Phan Thi Kim P**c, then commandeered a car to take her to a local hospital – at 30% her burns were life threatening, and potentially beyond the scope of the local medical facilities.

Nik, with the help of journalist colleagues arranged for her transfer to an American facility.

Recently Nick's creation of the image has been bought into dispute, with an ongoing legal battle continuing. ....

It's coming around the bend! 600 tons of American railroad heritage, Union Pacific Big Boy 4014.

Big Boy 4014 will officially arrive in Scranton at Steamtown National Historic Site on June 15.

Come see a living marvel of American engineering and railroading's past. 85 years ago, the first batch of massive Big Boys rolled out of the American Locomotive Company's shops bound for the Rocky Mountains. Now Big Boy 4014, the only operating Big Boy remaining, returns east for the first time since 1941 for a special reunion with Steamtown's Big Boy 4012.

Big Boy 4014 will remain at Steamtown NHS from June 15 through June 30 before beginning its trip to Philadelphia for the 4th of July.

Begin planning your trip by visiting our official website at nps.gov/stea and purchasing your tickets at recreation.gov.

*PLEASE NOTE*: Steamtown National Historic Site will be closed Sunday, June 14 in preparation for the Big Boy Reunion event.

EVERY PICTURE TELLS AN AMERICAN STORY!

Nursery school playground.
FSA camp. Robstown, Texas 1942

In early 1942, FSA photographer Arthur Rothstein made a record of life at several of the agency’s Texas migrant-labor camps. The FSA sent Rothstein on this assignment to Texas just weeks after America entered WW II. President Roosevelt had recognized that agricultural production—and the well-being of essential workers and their families—were now matters of military concern. When a family stayed at an FSA camp, they had access to medical and dental care. The children were ensured proper nutrition and attended nursery or elementary school.

On this assignment Rothstein visited this government-run camp on the Gulf Coast near Corpus Christi and others in Sinton to the north, in the Rio Grande Valley, and in Weslaco near McAllen. He also visited Texas A&M at College Station to document the school’s enormous contributions to the Allied war effort. During WW II, the University sent more than twenty thousand combat troops into service and produced more officers for active duty than the Army and Naval Academies combined.

Love is in the sky—no, really. 🌌 On the evenings of June 8 and 9, Venus and Jupiter will appear within 2 degrees of each other. That’s just over one pinkie width of distance with your hand held at arm’s length, and close enough to simultaneously fit in a pair of binoculars. It will be the closest visible alignment of the two planets in the Northern Hemisphere until 2028.

EVERY PICTURE TELLS AN AMERICAN STORY!

Rehabilitation client's son.
Kaufman Co. Texas 1936

During the Great Depression farmwives typically controlled household accounts and home production. The Farm Security Administration (FSA), a New Deal agency and base of operations for Rothstein’s Photo Unit, was created to combat rural poverty with loans, education, health care and resettlement. The self-sufficiency of farm families who obtained loans from the FSA was encouraged with distribution of informational and instructive “Live at Home” bulletins as well as visits from Female Home Demonstrators.

They were provided by the Federal Home Demonstration Program whose agents were missionaries of modernization, introducing new appliances such as the pressure-cooker, especially useful in preserving food. Agents provided instruction in various aspects of home economics including canning techniques. Rural wives “put up” pickles, jams, jellies and compotes, vegetables—even meat—to see the family through the winter. A cupboard or cellar filled with preserved or “canned” fruits and vegetables supported good health during the Great Depression.
